Amazon.co.uk Review

CS Lewis's utterly enchanting The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has long since taken its place in history as a classic, bewitching generations of children and adults since the 1950s. To take such a revered and treasured tale and to illustrate it in a new, dynamic way is no mean feat, but Christian Birmingham, one of the most talented and well respected artists of his generation, more than lives up to the challenge.

With his use of strong, vivid colours combined with a breathtaking delicacy of touch, Birmingham has taken this carefully abridged version of the story to new heights, brilliantly capturing the true essence of Narnia and never once losing sight of the magic of it all.The perfect way to introduce new, young readers to the fantastical worldbehind the wardrobe, this striking and exciting picture book is set to become a classic in its own right. --Susan Harrison

Synopsis

The Narnia Chronicles, first published in 1950, have been and remain some of the most enduringly popular books ever published. The best known, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, has been translated into 29 languages! The year 2000 marks the 50th anniversary of first publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe introduced readers to the wonders and enchantment of Narnia when it was first published almost fifty years ago. Since then, the hearts and imaginations of millions of readers have been caputured by the story of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, who step through a magic wardrobe into Narnia, once the peaceful land of Talking Beasts, dwarfs, giants and fauns, but now frozen into eternal winter by the evil White Witch. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has enchanted readers for almost fifty years and now, for the first time, will delight younger children as a picture book. With Christian Birmingham's illustrations providing an exquisite setting for the carefully abridged text, it is set to become a classic in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Narnia for a young child, 8 Mar 2002
I have just finished reading this book with my 6 year old son and it was as much a thrill for him as it was for me (having read it first more than 20 years ago!). This version was a perfect introduction to the wonder of Narnia because of the brilliant illustrations and easy text. It was pure a delight watching his face light up as he looked at the picture of Aslan flying through the air (with Susan and Lucy on his back) after coming back to life. After reading the book, we also watched the BBC video version of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - and this is now his favourite video even ahead of Shrek and Cats & Dogs!

5.0 out of 5 stars A magic step through the wardrobe, 20 Jan 2001
This is a marvellous book for all ages. I was captivated by it when I was very young and I am now haveing to buy yet another copy because my original is falling to pieces. It is a book that introduces you to the magical world of narnia and the adventures of four human siblings. It has everything you would expect, good guys, bad guys. Battles and heroism. It also has parts that make you burst into tears. It inspired a great cartoon and I love it. From the magical creatures to the evil witch it is a book that is impossible to put down. Once read you just wish to read it again. I would also recomend the other books in the series. CS Lewis is a great author and Narnia is a wonderful, magical land where we can all be heors and heroines.
