Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This beautifully presented pop-up version of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit is a delight for readers young and old. Taking some of the main scenes from the classic tale, each is brought to life by 3D pop ups of John Howe's breathtaking artwork. The spiders of Mirkwood quiver on their webs, Smaug the Dragon breathes fire as Bilbo tiptoes off with his treasure and the clash of the five armies bursts from the page. There are hidden secrets of most of the pages and even scrolls that pull out from each page and feature text from that particular scene in the book. This sturdy and well-made pop up book will bring hours of pleasure for generations if looked after well. --Jonathan Weir

Synopsis

A dazzling visual and tactile experience, featuring new, breathtaking artwork from Tolkien artist John Howe. Tolkien's world is brought to life in this stunning and sophisticated celebration of The Hobbit. Featuring many new and innovative paper-engineering techniques, it is a book that will appeal to adult enthusiasts as well as children, and will even attract a new audience The five spreads reconstruct the main events in the story: * the party at Bag End * Gollum's underground cavern * the grotesque spiders in Mirkwood * Smaug and his treasure * and the Battle of Five Armies. Each spread also features pull-out scrolls with relevant quotes from the book. These enhance the impact of each three-dimensional image without intruding on the action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A collector's must-have!, 26 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Even thought the pop-up genre is generally considered the domain of Children's books, any fan of not only J.R.R Tolkien's books, but the art of John Howe (considered to be THE Tolkien artist) should pick up this book. It's an interesting read, if a little simplified, and the imagery is absolutely breathtaking. I reccomend this book for anyone from the serious collector to those just looking for a beautifully made, well written book for their loved ones, young and old.
