Review

"Frank McCourt's gentle, understated voice throws into relief the admirable humour, spirit and humanity of the people who made the degradation of his childhood bearable." Gramophone 1/11/97 "It was Frank McCourt's year and his reading of Angela's Ashes on audio tape is the best reason I can think of for taking a long car journey." Irish Times 25/12/97 "Frank McCourt's reading is captivating from the first moment. Felicitous writing and harsh voicing combine to make an apparently dismal story absolutely hilarious." Evening Standard 22/12/97

Product Description

A very special gift: the audiobooks of both Angela's Ashes and 'Tis, superbly and attractively republished for this special gift edition. 'The reader of this stunning memoir can only hope that Mr McCourt will set down the story of his subsequent adventures in America in another book. Angela's Ashes is so good it deserves a sequel.' MICHIKO KAKUTANI, New York Times Angela's Ashes was a publishing phenomenon. Frank McCourt's critically acclaimed, lyrical memoir of his impoverished Limerick childhood won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics' Circle Award, the Royal Society of Literature Award and the Los Angeles Times Award amongst others, and rapidly became a word-of-mouth bestseller topping all charts worldwide for over two years. It left readers, listeners and critics alike eager to hear more about Frank McCourt's incredible, poignant life. 'Tis is the story of Frank's American journey from impoverished immigrant with rotten teeth, infected eyes and no formal education to brilliant raconteur and schoolteacher. Saved first by a straying priest, then by the Democratic party, then by the United States Army, then by New York University -- which admitted him on a trial basis though he had no high school diploma -- Frank had the same vulnerable but invincible spirit at nineteen that he had at eight and still has today. And 'Tis is a tale of survival as vivid, harrowing, and often hilarious as Angela's Ashes. Yet again, it is through the power of storytelling that Frank finds a life for himself. 'It is only the best storyteller who can so beguile his readers that he leaves them wanting more when he's done...McCourt proves himself one of the very best' (Newsweek). Here, both audiobooks are republished in a beautiful boxed edition, brimming with luxurious new touches, that all Frank McCourt's many, many fans will want to own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here's what I think, 13 May 2004
By E. H. Emmott "_-_emily_-_" (UK :]) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I think many of you have watched the film, 'Angela's Ashes.' I'm glad to say that the film was nothing like the book. The thing is, the film was so depressing. Obviously, the events that occur in the film happens in the book too, but something's different. It may be just me, but I found myself unable to hold in a gille in every chapter of this book...

Frank McCourt has had a very unfortunate childhood compared to me, with all the Irish rain and the greyness goig on, but he doesn't spend hours dwelling on it like most other people would have. I thought it was filled with 'doom and gloom.' I could not have been more wrong. His sarcastic comments often left me wondering if should laugh or cry.

The book is just so much better than the film. It's richer and tastier. I have to admit, at first, I was hesitant to open the pages. As soon as I read the first book, I went to get the secong, which is about his life in America. This book was even better.

One of the first events that happen: a naked, drunken priest comes onto Frank. What a way to begin the show. Compared to Angela's Ashes, 'Tis is slightly more exciting. You should read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most intriguing and captivating books I have ever read., 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Frank McCourt's telling of the story of his life enabled me to travel with him through life from a poverty stricken child growing up in Ireland to a young man who discovers the 'American Dream' in New York. I actually felt the hunger and humiliation he suffered as a boy, but also saw life through the eyes of child who did not know any better. His books are amazingly funny and extremely moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unbelievable, sometimes hysterical account of life as was, 24 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I found this book completely addictive, and a one which strangely effected my life. In a world which is crowded with privileges and excesses, to hear the tale of a boy who saw the eating of an egg as frivilous was extraordinary. This book cannot be matched and is the most earthy read I have ever had.
