Product Description

Synopsis
The novel that launched the astonishing career of one of the 20th century's greatest writers of action and suspense -- an acclaimed classic of heroism and the sea in World War II. Now reissued in a new cover style. The story of men who rose to heroism, and then to something greater, HMS Ulysses takes its place alongside The Caine Mutiny and The Cruel Sea as one of the classic novels of the navy at war. It is the compelling story of Convoy FR77 to Murmansk -- a voyage that pushes men to the limits of human endurance, crippled by enemy attack and the bitter cold of the Arctic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart rending, 1 Sep 2000

Even at this my third time of reading, HMS Ulysses is truly outstanding. A vivid description of life on the Russian convoys. You can almost feel the raging of the sea and the bitter cold. Most of all one can feel the fear, exaustion and bitterness of the 700 plus men forced out once again to face a multi-faceted enemy. The U Boats, Bombers ,Battleships and not least of all the sea itself. You are left at times in total awe of the courage and determination with which the men carry out their duties having had little or no sleep for hours on end. Where even men resentful of the authority over them are galvanised into actions of extraordinary bravery and resoluteness.

I defy anyone not to be moved by this truly inspiring and at times, profoundly sad story. Highly recommended reading.
