  • These bulbs are the newest generation and use the most modern designs. You may have used cheap, unbranded or previous generation compact fluorescent bulbs and been disappointed by their size, brightness, light quality or value. But please don't think these are the same. They are not - they are much better!
  • Their average lifespan is 6,000 hours (typically 6 years use). Normal incandescent light bulbs have a lifespan of only 1,000 hours (typically one years use).
  • Because of their long life, bulb changes are far less frequent. This can be a big advantage for difficult to reach lights, such as those in rooms with high ceilings or above staircases.
  • They generate 70% less heat than normal bulbs and their operating temperature is much lower. Typically the glass temperature will be about 40°C, compared to 150°C for a normal bulb. Hence light fittings, light shades and adjacent walls and ceilings remain cooler, and this can reduce the damage and discolouration due to heat.
  • By replacing every light fitting in the home with a low-energy bulb, the average family could save up to £240 per year." [Energy Saving Trust]

Same review as for the 8W one: 5 X Philips 8W (40W) Energy Saver Light Bulbs, B22 BC Cap, 10 Years

"You will not believe your eyes the size when you see this product. The glass part is very very small, which makes it ideal for small areas like basement, table lamps and bathroom sphere lights, or when used without a shade.
Once you get past the size, you will notice that is almost instant on at full brightness, that the light is plenty for the wattage, that the hue is just right on the very light yellowish range.
Very delighted with the purchase, replaced some of the ugly long energy saving bulbs around the house. "

These bulbs are OK for start up time and for general lighting (i.e. not reading). However, all the ones I bought less than 3 years ago said 10 years on them (almost all have failed), this picture states 8 years (in the corner) and the tech details claim 6 - well they are certainly becoming more honest. Eventually they will start printing the reality, which if you search about (look on philips genie bulbs on AMAZON for instance) you will see is more like 1 or 2 years.

Still, where's the competition? They have taken over the supermarket shelves and most online shopping, so until a good LED alternative comes along (like it did for GU10 fittings)I guess I'll carry on buying them.

I bought these as I graduated from the bog-standard GLS light bulb to the energy-saving type, fully expecting the replacement bulbs to last as long (short) as the older type. I seriously think they might outlast me...

Whats that dimm glow i can just make out???, Let me feel for the light switch. Ummmm, yes, the switch is on, so that dim glow is what passes for a light now. It shows the room, but if you want to do more than, say, seduce an unexpecting member of the oposite sex, like, for instance, read a book, then forget it.

OK, i spose they don't use much power, and they seem well made, ummm so thumbs up I spose. Now where can I buy a box of candels, cos I really want to read a book now.

Ummmmm Amazon.com, home and kitchen, white wax candels, one box, and a disposeable lighter, free delivery, O i wish I could see what I was doing

Came very quickly and well packaged. These bulbs are great (previously had 100W so my room lacks light slightly but saving a lot. Had to change dimmers as they flicker with them so cost me more than I hoped to go green. Glad I am though.
