Book Description

For Michael Cairne, the change was more than just puberty - it was a psychic event that would completely change his teenage life. Capable of manipulating the thoughts of others, his gift would put him on the run from his nation's brutal police force. His only savior is a man named Louis Blake, a wanted criminal and terrorist who claims to be innocent, and to know the reason Michael's mind can link to those of the people around him - often with deadly results.

When Blake takes him to a small town hidden in the mountains, away from the government men hunting him, Michael will push the limits of his telepathic ability and, when he falls in love with a girl mysteriously tied to his past, enter a whole new world of danger.

The men hunting him have unleashed another like him - a telepath capable of destroying people from the inside out. In order to survive, Michael must ascend. He must enter a whole new plane of existence. He must do it without unleashing the monster within, planted inside of him the day he was conceived, and designed to be the most dangerous weapon known to man.

More About the Author

I write novels and publish them independently.
My stories are character-driven and focus on people, not plot. They tend toward the epic and the coming-of-age, with characters discovering talents they never knew they had and worlds they never knew existed.

I've lived in New York City, Spain and Colombia. I studied English and Philosophy at Colgate University and received an MFA in fiction from The New School, where I was told never to self-publish. But you know what they say: rules are meant to be broken.

A surprise find, the front cover is a bit cheesy but the story is great. Very captivating and whilst there is lots going on its easy to follow - would love to find out what happens next! Whilst this is a bit of a coming of age book there is a variety of characters, I'm 34 and loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, Dark Story of a Boy's Rise to Power 22 July 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was an incredible book. On the surface I thought this would be your typical story about a teenage boy who discovers he has powers and saves the world. While this may be the ultimate premise on the surface, this book has so much more to it than that. It takes what might be considered a cliche plot and fleshes it out into something unique and heart-gripping. While the main character might be a teenager, this book is in no way some light YA novel. The book deals with many mature themes and poses many interesting philosophical questions--mainly, what happens when someone is given ultimate power?--as it documents Michael's "ascendancy" from your average teenage boy to a powerful rebel leader.

This is a book where almost every character you meet, even the ones who at first appear to be two-bit villains or henchmen, have multiple layers. The good guys have their flaws and issues and sometimes it takes awhile to fully put someone in the "good guy" or "bad guy" camp. Michael is a complicated character who is given incredible power and is at first driven by a need for vengeance. I really liked Michael, although at times I worried about him--as I was supposed to, I'm sure. I was like many of the characters in the novel, worrying that Michael might eventually fall to temptation to use his growing power for something bad. Michael preserves though, and his character grows and matures significantly throughout the novel.

I think the one (minor) complaint I had about this novel was that it could be incredibly depressing at times. You tended to see the worst in humanity from the people around Michael, and I found it hard to trust Michael's friends for fear that they might betray him somehow (though there were several characters who I knew would stay in the "good guy" camp). It's the kind of book where no character is safe from dying, and Michael's road is never once easy. Still, the difficulty of Michael's path just made it all the more gripping to read about. I couldn't put the book down for most of the time.

There's a small hint of a sequel at the end of the book, but I wonder if it will happen. The author has set it up so that the novel could easily stand on its own, and I would almost prefer for the novel to stay as it is, with that hint of malice lingering in the future just showing that Michael's battles are still not over. As I've said, I heartily enjoyed this book and truly felt like I had gone on a long journey by the end of it. If you want to see a post-apocalyptic novel done right, read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific read 8 Aug. 2013

I loved this book from start to finish. I am not going to spoil the story for you by telling you what happens. Suffice to say this book is a realistic ride through a future that I hope never happens. It's well written, very engaging, hard to put down and the characters are well crafted. 10 out of 10 for me. I look forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, beautifully written 21 July 2013

I only give five stars to one of the best books I've read. This book is one of them. The book begins telling the story of a young man and his family in a dictatorship regime. Suddenly, his family is threatened with death in front of him, and he is hearing voices in his head.

This book is masterfully written. The author uses such descriptive phrases and wording I was just THERE so many times. And I thoroughly enjoyed the story itself. I read this book at times when I don't normally read. I highly recommend this book.

Is there a sequel, or is there to be one? If there isn't, will you please write more?
3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars; Promising Concept That Loses Steam As It Progresses 24 Jun. 2014

I started out really liking this book. I like dystopian fiction and the addition of psychic powers sounded interesting to me. (If the book had sustained that level of interest throughout i would have awarded this 4.5 stars.) Sadly, I found that as the story progressed my interest waned and I found it myself feeling less-than-enthused at continuing through to the end.

Once Michael arrived in Gulch the story took a turn for the worst. At first I was reminded a little of the Stephen King novel Wizard and Glass (Dark Tower IV) but soon that faded. What I was left with felt a little bit like I was reading Young Adult literature. Due to the violence in the story I'm sure that was not the author's intention. Additionally, the pacing was off. I felt that the story would focus on boring evens like the protagonist's love interest, and then gloss over potentially exciting events like the jailbreak. Even the climax lacked impact because of it's sudden resolution.

This story could have befitted from a harsher editor. Someone to "trim the fat," if you will. I feel like that would help the pacing issue.

That being said, this story does have some good parts. Fans of dytopian science fiction and readers who enjoy stories of psychic powers should find something to enjoy here. Casual readers might find the story hit-or-miss.

Great read and I got it for only .99. The first one was free - what more could I asked for? A good book and I got it. The ending left it open for a 3rd book. I'll be waiting.
