Douglas Hulick is author of the "Tales of the Kin", a series of fantasy novels that have been described as "'Goodfellas' meets Sword & Sorcery."

When not writing, Douglas is a stay-at-home father, historical combat practitioner (with a focus on 17th century Italian rapier), and the house poodle-wrangler. He has, at various points, worked as a bartender, technical writer, free-lance tabletop game writer, and brewer. It was all a phase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than The First! 30 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback
Douglas Hulick's second novel is even better than the first, and that is huge praise coming from someone as difficult to impress as myself. This second novel sees our (anti?)hero out on a quest that the first book set up beautifully, and from the first chapter you really want to head off on the adventure and experience everything with the characters. If anything, Hulick's skill as an author has taken another leap forward; there's such a confidence to this book that each chapter becomes a mini-adventure, and it kept me turning the pages into the small hours of the morning. There's a healthy combination of wise cracking humour, interweaving plotlines, shady characters and beloved ones, lethal swordfights, and such realistic descriptions of places and scenery that I had trouble coming back to reality after finishing each chapter. For anyone who loves a brilliant, roguish adventure with characters who quickly become your best friends, this is a great continuation of a highly recommended series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down 27 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really can't express how much I enjoyed reading this - There isn't much that'll keep my eyes open after 11 these days, but this book had me awake until the early hours every night! I picked it up not really remembering why it was on my wish list (it'd been a pretty long time since I read the first book in this series), and have read it in every spare minute I could find since.

Loved the characters and the writing style (biting my nails in suspense one minute, and then grinning ear to ear the next) which kept me guessing, never quite sure what Drothe was going to do next.

Out of all the fantasy books I've read in the last few years, Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire series stood out more than any others (for me) by far - Until I read this. Whatever it was that appealed to me so much before about Broken Empire is in here too.

I can't wait for the next one.

Get writing Douglas!!! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it 7 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback
Hulick just seems to have that ability to drag you into a story, keep you interested and make you desperate for some spare time to get back to the book. Hulick has this. The main protagonist is simply a fantastic creation, he is interesting, get's himself in to all sorts of spots and in a strange way is believable.

The main thing above all others that I enjoy is the interaction between various characters, this is often witty and often equates to verbal warfare. The only other author who seems to excel in this interaction, humor, pace and action in the first person is Daniel Polansky. i cannot recommend this book highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy at its best. 25 May 2014
By Sands
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The second book in the series has not disappointed. It has a slow start but then the action gets going and you are hooked.

This series has all the elements that I love - intrigue, fighting, strong females and magic. There are plot twists, plot twists and plot twists. Very clever but in a down to earth way.

Looking forward to the next book but not sure how long I will have to wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars What should be trite is really enjoyable 8 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really shouldn't like this book. It has all the elements of a "me too" book about a thief who's really a hero in some unspecified fantasy city. But they the writing happens and it's all really great. The twists are only mildly surprising but just well executed. The book flows and you can dip in an out really easily.
This basically picks up where the first book left off - Drothe is rapidly thrown into a situation where he has to live by his wits while the Degan's wonder about helping and hindering in equal measure.
There is also the shadow of a really fascinating concept hidden in the background. The story of the continually re-incarnating emporer who has split his soul in three seems really intriguing. So far it's been almost ignored but it starts to play a tiny part in the story here and I'm really hoping it starts to feature in the next book as it's a really interesting concept.

I enjoyed this very much, and read it quickly, but I thought it slightly less good than Among Thieves as I was a little frustrated by some plot points.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of a great series 26 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book continued the excellent story that started with Among Thieves and leaves the author plenty of room to draw us into this world again and again.

The quality of the writing is very good and the characters, although mostly "Bad Guys", engage your sympathy and affection.

It is so different so see a fantasy novel view its's world from street level rather than from the thrones and palaces. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and am waiting for the next one with baited breath.

Maybe a glossary to help with all the street terms , there's quite a few. And a short history of the empire. The gap between novels made remembering tricky. Read more
