Book Description

This unique book shows ECGs as they really appear in everyday practice and not in the usual format as presented in textbooks. Each of the 100 traces is accompanied by a list of the main diagnostic features along with a full report of the ECG, noting any other clinical details that may be important. Boxes list the common causes of the abnormalities shown. Key features of the ECG are reproduced again using annotations to guide the reader. Thus the book provides in itself a collection of full 12-lead ECGs of a wide range of common clinical problems encountered in casualty. This collection of traces, updated for this Third Edition with new cases, will be invaluable to all involved in the diagnosis of the most commonly encountered ECG abnormalities.

  • Provides full size and realistic reproduction of 12-lead ECGs
  • Includes a wide range of cardiac abnormalities
  • Highlights the diagnostic criteria for each abnormality listed
  • Reflects how this subject is encountered in practice
  • Assists the reader by illustrating alongside the key features of the recording; thus these can be viewed in relation to the whole trace
  • Thoroughly revised and updated for this new edition with additional case examples
  • Includes a new section on the approach to the ECG.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last the ECG book you really needed 14 Feb. 2000
By A Customer
At last a reasonably priced ECG book with real size twelve lead ECG recordings on pink graph paper, most of which include a rhythm strip. This is just what the learner or practised individual needs, no squinting at pocket sized tracings to notice atrial fibrillation. Eighty records are arranged by abnormality; rhythm disorders, blocks, pacing, ischaemia, hypertrophy, and miscellaneous abnormalities. As there is only one example of each, the reader should take care not to simply look at the patterns - a common error in beginners when learning this subject - but note the brief but concise listed features and clinical notes. Important aspects of many of the recordings are duplicated as inserts with the notes for emphasis. If you're on a tight budget this has to be a best buy for quality of content, and the excellent index makes this a handy reference book. Suitable for all levels of nursing and medical and paramedical staff, whatever your level of knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ECG book I've seen 7 Nov. 2010
By Me!
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is easily the best ECG book I've come across. I found "ECG Made Easy" too difficult to be useful and a cardiac nurse specialist recommended this book to me instead. It has full size 12 lead ECGs or rhythm strips on one page and explanations on the facing page including features of the ECG and clinical notes regarding the underlying condition. The layout lends itself well to self testing as well as a primary learning tool. I'd recommend this to all medical students and junior doctors.

Excellent. As a GP I found this very useful for pattern recognition in recognising pathology and variations from normal. The book is well laid out and comes with clinical information and A4 size ECG's

4.0 out of 5 stars Great help to reinforced ECG understanding 28 July 2005
The process of reading and interpreting ECGs may be a tricky one and it has been always known as one of the "dark" areas of diagnosis, especially because CV diseases are so common. This book does help showing the reader the most common ECG alterations seen in the daily practice of Medicine (and some not so common too!). It does require a previous knowledge of electrophysiology and impulse generation and transmission, as well as basic interpretation of electrocardiography, but it is clear that it is not the intention of the book to take the reader through these. In my view, it lacks more clinical information, which would make the reading of each case even more enjoyable (there is a very short clinical note for each case though). However, it is a good book, explained in a clear and very understandable way, which makes the understanding of ECG quick and easy, thanks to big and realistic ECG prints. In addition, I think is good value for money, recommended especially for Medical students and Junior Doctors.

5.0 out of 5 stars ECGs Glaore 21 May 2009
By Sarah E
This is a really good book for those in your latter years. It is essentially a book that is full of ECG's. This book goes through comman ECGs and discusses them. This book is not only suitable for undergraduates but also for post graduates and is often referenced as a text for the MCEM ( the membership to the college of Emergency medicine) It is a good book for practicing your ECGs and has about 120 of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and v helpful ECG textbook! 30 Jun. 2011
ECGs by example is an excellent textbook which has really helped me with pathological ECGs. I think that many medical students would agree that understanding the normal ECG and how it works is fine, but when faced with a pathological ECG, we panic! This textbook however, presents a collection of over 100 real ECGs helping the reader to understand more about pathological traces.
A short, succinct section on the basics of the ECG begins the book and looks at how to approach the ECG. Then, the book is organised into 10 sections with several ECGs in each looking at different cases. Each ECG is shown on a full size A4 page with information about the ECG on the next page; the third edition has some special binding to allow the reader to flick easily between pages. Each case is described with a summary, features and a clinical note. Occasional extra notes are included on particular conditions to help the reader learn more. Some x-rays are also included and an index helps you to go to the ECG you want quickly.
Overall, I have found ECGs by example to be a very helpful textbook. I feel more confident with abnormal ECGs than I did before and would recommend it to any medical student who would like to improve their knowledge and learn to how interpret the abnormal ECG more easily.

This is a very comprehensive manual for both hospital medical and senior nursing staff. Easy to understand and it gives full explanations of each tracing and further treatment to correct abnormalities if appropriate.
