More About the Author

I write historical novels set in New Zealand, starting in the 1880s. I'm currently working on my sixth book, this one covering the years from 1918 to 1923. I'm fascinated by social history, particularly that of my own country.

I was born in New Zealand, and apart from two years in England have lived here all my life. I'm married to my childhood sweetheart, who grew up in the farming valley that's the inspiration for my imaginary one.

We have a few acres in the countryside, where we have an orchard and a large vegetable garden, and a small flock of sheep to keep the grass down. We make our own wine, cider, jams, jellies and sauces.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and straight forward 20 May 2011

The author of this short story uses lovely language to tell a simple love story. It's not a story one will find unforgettable but it was a nice read with a cup of tea on a rainy afternoon.

A short read. Lovely story, good characterisation, a real sense of place and time. A poignant story, do not be surprised if you shed a tear or two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful short story 30 Dec. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a really bittersweet short story.

Very well written and the emotions are exquisitely nuanced. Just the right length, any longer and it would lose its impact. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Promises to Keep Series 12 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read the first 3 books in this series, and I am now on the 4th book, Second Chance. It has been years from I have read books as good as these.
Oh it's a lovely lovely story with the loveliest characters. I just can't recommend these books enough. At times I have cried at the injustices of one of the characters and at other times I have laughed out loud.
Shayne Parkinson is one of the best Authors' I have come across in a long long time, if fact from Catherine Cookson, and I started reading her 30 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Short story about secret longing.. 13 July 2012
By Cheryl M-M TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Short read.
A trip down memory lane of sorts.
A story of unfulfilled wishes and secret longing.
I would have enjoyed knowing whether it was completely fictitious or perhaps based on true events.
It could have had a little more depth and seems to be more of an afterthought, but then often that is the distinct charm of the short story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sad but touching story 1 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a short story and doesn't take long to read. The characters are made very real and the story of their hardships rings true. A young couple starting out on married life together with all the fears and hopes and dreams they share - in a place which seems impossible, until years of hard work and dedication make it live.

The couple's own lives don't turn out quite as they had planned, but then none of us know what Fate really has in store for us. This is a beautiful little book, written from the heart, and I'd recommend it to anyone who has a box of tissues handy.

Thank you so much.. Shayne Parkinson.
