4.0 out of 5 stars Keep the converter in the same USB port or regret it later!, 15 Jan 2005
This review is from: eXpansys USB - Serial Cable (Electronics)
This review is a little technical, so apologies to those who are not! This product, like a number of other similar products, is great once it works. The main problems users are likely to face is the fact that this USB-to-Serial converter is installed as a virtual COM port, typically, COM4, COM5 or higher. It is normally essential that the user reconfigures this converter as COM1 or COM2 in order for the Windows Operating System and installed programs to be able to 'see' it properly (although not excessively difficult to do, if you're not tech-savvy, be careful what you change in Windows via the Control Panel or you may regret it after the event!) However, although an excellent product, be warned....if you unplug the converter from its usual USB port and then insert it into another USB port, there is more than a reasonable chance that the converter will be 're-installed' as yet another virtual COM port. This seems to happen with Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional, especially if the PC is rebooted at least once without the converter being plugged in at all! Whether this very annoying reconfiguration will happen also seems to depend on what other USB devices are installed at the time. The best thing is, once installed and configured correctly, to leave the converter in the same USB port indefinitely. PS also be careful when installing PDA or mobile telephone programs that interface with these devices via a USB port. If these programs are installed after the USB-to-Serial conveter, some of the programs can have difficulty working properly if they are unable to be reconfigured to 'see' COM ports greater than COM2. I have not tried this product on either Windows 98 or Windows XP Home but would suggest that similar issues may be found? Hope this helps those who, like me, bought the product 'in haste' to cure an important problem and found myself with several hours of 'fiddling' to get it to work as I wanted!

3.0 out of 5 stars Expansys usb serial adaptor or should that be prolific, 9 Feb 2004

I ordered one of these items expecting it to be just simple plug & play not so you need to re-map your pc's com ports this device installs as Com 5 on most PC's problem being this is a virtual com port, ideally you want this device to be com 1 try visiting http://tech.prolific.com.tw FAQ's section for an explanation of how to allocate this device to com 1 after doing this the device worked fine.
This device has been badged by quite a few firms so it might be worth trying this fix for other manufacters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap quick and easy, 9 Oct 2005
This review is from: eXpansys USB - Serial Cable (Electronics)
To paraphrase the TV advert, this does exactly what it says on the packet. I installed this on my PC running WinXP Home with the device being assigned Com Port 4 and successfully tested it with my application. Total time taken from opening the packet to having it work was less than 3 minutes. Good product, easy to install and easy to use.
