Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This software is very good at what it does. If you want to experiment with creating drum patterns to use seriously later on, this does exactly what you want it do, and a cheap way of doing it too. However, this would never replace my copy of Propellerheads Reason 4. Those who are generally only into drum-programming and not interested in creating full musical pieces could do worse than choose this software, and it's a good entry level package to get you started. However, if you are serious about music, you're better to save up for a more expensive music package such as Propellerheads Reason 4.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is the computer equivalent of one of those drum machines that were popular in the eighties and nineties. You program in your drum patterns, and your computer plays them back for you. It's a whole lot more flexible than an eighties drum machine, though.

The iDrum terminology is a little confusing: you select your kit (kicks, hats, percussion, snares or your own sounds), create the drum patterns and string the patterns together in combination to make a song. You can only have one song for each kit. Thankfully, you can take copies of the kit to make further songs!

The great thing about this program is that it is as close to intuitive as you could reasonably get. All you need to do is click in the appropriate cells to create a rhythm, and you're making music. If you want to do some fine-tuning, you can adjust tempo, swing and groove, by dragging the mouse or by overtyping the value. Each track has stereo pan, mute and solo buttons, and the volume of each note can be adjusted individually. If you want a time signature of 15/8, this program can handle it. However, be aware that if you use time signatures of 5/4 or more, the window won't be wide enough to show the whole pattern, and you'll need to click back and forth to see it all. The same applies if you want to work in anything smaller than semiquavers. The program can work down to hemidemisemiquavers if you really want, in which case there are up to four screens sideways in each pattern. You can see up to eight parts at a time, but the program can handle many more - you can scroll up and down to see them all.

You can import your own wave samples, so you're not restricted to the samples that come with the program. I created a kit using the system sounds that come with Windows. It didn't sound great, but it worked.

The program is not complicated, but it is comprehensive and easy to use once you grasp the concept. Most of what you need is right there in front of you.

Having said that, a few things are not as obvious as they could be. You can export standalone .mid files simply by dragging from the "MIDI Drag" icon (the clue is in the name, but it took me a while to notice). Secondly, the tiny picture of a file just to the left of the Pattern name contains several copy/paste and load/save options. The song editor is nothing like as polished as the pattern editor. To assemble a song, click the "e" in the bottom left corner. This brings up a rather basic-looking but perfectly functional window for scheduling the patterns into a song. To playblack the song (not just the current pattern) the small green "Song Mode" button needs to be clicked.

There is no paper manual, by the way. The sturdy-feeling cardboard box is stuffed full of corrugated cardboard, with the program CD slipped in somewhere inside. There is plenty of support and resources available on-line, though.

iDrum works fine in XP and Vista, and I've also found it works reliably in Windows 7 RC. In my experience, it is absolutely rock-solid stable, and it doesn't need a high-powered PC to run properly either - I'm running it on a 2.66GHz Celeron, and it works just fine.

Fantastic bit of kit. Very easy to use. Able to replicate any type of drum beat to accompany any genre of music. I use it for practice sessions as backing for guitar or for recording on a home recording studio. Excellent price and very quick delivery. Highly recommended.

Pretty average drum package
On the plus side it's easy to change volume levels of individual bits of the kits. That's about it.

Not really workable
This software was a disappointment. I was looking forward creating some drum loops and found this software to be superficial - more of a toy than a useful tool for creating tracks.

Installing the software was easy. Did this used to be a Shareware product many years ago? There's no shame in that but it's not the most polished piece of software. Read more
