The remarkable story of Welsh boxing legend, Howard Winston is served up in this award winning movie from Burn Hand Films. The story follows Howard from the time he lost three fingers in an industrial accident to him being crowned Featherweight champion of the world after beating Mitsunori Seki in the 1968 fight at the Royal Albert Hall. It truly is a life affirming story of grit and determination as the man who couldn't even make a fist with his right hand went onto rule the boxing world.

The part of Howard Winstone is taken by Stuart Brannan who also co-wrote the screenplay with director, Neil Jones and between them they have produced a grim, gritty but ultimately joyous film that fails to fall into the sentimenal trap which is always a danger with sporting based movies. The film pulls no punches in telling it as it was and the grim surroundings of 1960's industrial Wales are brought to vivid life. There are some great character sketches and being a Welshman myself and a Valley boy too, it was pleasing to see characters that rang true on the screen. Boyd Clack, as Howard Winstone Snr gave a great turn as a man suffering from black lung disease, the curse of the coal miner, whose only desire is to help his son overcome all odds in his quest for greatness.

I was lucky enough to see this film at the premiere in Cardiff and it was brilliant.

The life of Howard Winstone was a hard fought battle and the film portrays this perfectly.
The cast deliver fantastic performances. What's nice is that some of the people featured in the story actually feature, working alongside young actors who are playing them. It makes it feel more personal having people who knew Howard in the film.

I'm really looking forward to watching it again on DVD and everyone should try to see this if they get a chance!

'Risen' is the DVD about the life and rise to fame of the former
World featherweight boxing champion Howard Winstone. After
suffering a nasty accident while working in a toy factory at the
age of 17, an accident that cost him the tops of his fingers,
making him unable to make a proper fist. Howard defied the odds
and became one of the greatest boxers ever produced in the
British Isles.Coming from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales Howard as an
amateur won a Gold medal in the Empire Games after winning the
Welsh and British ABA titles. As a professional he won 2 Lonsdale
belts outright, holding the British, Commonwealth and European
Featherweight titles. He had 3 tremendous bouts with Mexican legend
Vincente Saldivar before finally winning the World title at the
fourth attempt. This the true story of a Great Man, a must for
all even if you are not a boxing fan. Recommended.

Like the other reviewer I was lucky enough to see this at the WBC Night of Champions back in July last year. I'm so glad it's going to be available soon through Amazon. Realistic fight scenes and great acting throughout, would thoroughly recommend this film.

Impressive fight sequences and an excellent performance from its lead. Sometimes it's of even quality in its storytelling. Overall it's enjoyable and inspiring.

i thought this was a good film it was gritty and well played out the boxing scene were a bit iffy if felt like the fights were held in a pub rather then the albert hall but im guessing had a limited budget so may account for it the acting was ok there speech is slightly quiet but overall a good film

This has the best fight scenes I've ever seen! It's incredible!
I saw this at the WBC Night of Champions screening!! So excited to see it out on DVD!
There is no way the lead actor didn't take some hits making this, makes Mark Whalberg look like a pansy in The Fighter!

Incredible story too, a one handed boxer fighting for a world title, as his marriage declines and from a small mining town as well. Great acting, well made, awesome fights - it's finally a boxing film that you can take you girlfriend to!

I recommend highly!
