Michael has become one of my favourite films from the silent era, it has such depth of feeling and is beautifully composed. As in old photographs, there is an extraordinary amount of detail in the interior shots, and many of the objects on the set are of special interest, reflecting as they do the tastes of a great artist. There is plenty of time to absorb these things, as well as the wonderfully nuanced acting, although I found I enjoyed it even more on the second viewing. The subject of the artist and the young man whom he takes on as a model and sort-of surrogate son, with a definite sense of a gay feeling, is strikingly modern, and really moves you towards the end. I can't imagine there was any other film at the time that portrayed a gay love so overtly or sympathetically, and it is no surprise that it came out of Denmark which has always been such an exemplary society, I get the impression. It is a story of a man at the height of his powers undone by a feckless youth, but it is shown with such skill and restraint that you come away feeling you have been taken into a sense of our deepest humanity. I love the European score because it has so much Schumann and Mendelssohn; it seems to fit perfectly. An alternative American score is also provided, which, together with the booklet and extras make it a very well-produced edition.

Very interesting study of a master and his servant/heir. The DVD contains two discs with slightly different transfers and soundtracks (european and american). A commentary track with a Dreyer-scholar which is very informative and worth listening to containing production facts and more about Dreyer as a person - I listened to it right after watching the movie and had to listen through it all. Luxurious edition, highly recommended!

"Michael" is one of the lesser-known great movies from the silent era. Based on the novel "Mikaël" by Herman Bang, this 1924 German production was directed by the legendary Danish film maker Carl Dreyer. The film saw collaboration amongst others, with Thea von Harbou, Karl Freund (Metropolis) and Benjamin Christensen (Häxan). "Michael" has become most noticeable as one of the first gay films.

It tells the story of the (end of the) relationship between an older, established artist and his favourite young model. What I found fascinating is the way the complexities and subtleties of the relationship between both men are played out. As a result the master-apprentice, old-young, father-son dimensions enable one to empathise with both protagonists. It makes "Michael" mesmerizing even after watching it a second or third time.

As always with the excellent "Master of Cinema"-series, the DVD comes with an exciting amount of extras, including a thick booklet full of interesting background information and a long interview with Dreyer himself. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend "Michael" and the DVD should be part of any film historian's or early movies fan's collection.

Dreyer's MICHAEL is quite simply an excellent film that deserves to be appreciated by everyone. This sumptuous dvd set bleeds atmosphere and allows you to melt into the frames of this long unavailable film. Dreyer's attention to the exquisite sets and lighting is enough to carry the film alone but the liberal character driven story (featuring performances by the director Benjamin Christensen and cinematographer Karl Freund) is far in advance of its time with its deep reflection on sexuality, love and loss. A thoroughly recommended film from an always masterful director's work. The addition of a full length Caspar Tybjerg commentary only elevates this set further to the level of Criterion's discs.

A LITTLE UNSATISFIED ABOUT THE DISC DESIGN. WHY NOT PUT TWO VERSIONS TOGETHER IN ONE DISC? WHY NOT FIX THIS PROBLEM IN A NEW BLURAY FORMAT? BECAUSE "MIKAEL" IS CONTROVERSIAL? WHEN IT'S EASY TO SEE TWO GUYS KISSING ON MEDIA NOWADAYS...
