Key Features

High-Resolution Audio delivers premium sound

From source to speaker, Sony has united an array of technologies for the ultimate audio experience. For High-Resolution Audio files, the digital amp and specialized tweeters reproduce every subtlety, so you hear each note as the artist intended. For MP3s, digital processing software upscales compressed music to restore lost detail.

S-Master HX Digital Amp for pure sound quality

The built-in S-Master HX Digital Amplifier helps bring out the best of your High-Resolution Audio. It achieves this by reducing the noise levels usually experienced in the high frequency ranges, so you can enjoy clear, sharp sound.

DSEE HX technology upgrades compressed files

DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) technology upgrades the quality of your compressed music files. When an original music source is compressed, you lose the high frequency elements of your music. DSEE HX restores this to produce high quality sound that’s closer to the original CD recording.

Compact and light design

Along with its premium sound, the A10 Series High-Resolution Walkman features a premium look. Its compact, light design means it tucks easily into a pocket or purse, while its diamond-shaped control panel provides a sophisticated accent.

Built-in and expandable memory

Models come with either 16 GB or 64 GB storage built in; boost this with a microSDXC memory card for infinitely expandable playlists.

Made to listen: ClearAudio+

Make your listening as lifelike as possible. ClearAudio+ fine-tunes sound for an immersive, emotionally enriching experience that seems to envelope you. Hear music and lyrics with greater clarity and nuance for an experience that rivals that of a live performance.

Featuring aptX technology for wireless convenience

aptX technology powers the pure, wireless sound behind many of the world’s finest smartphones, speakers, soundbars, headphones and tablets. Now music lovers can enjoy the rich listening experience that only aptX can deliver: convenient wireless sound that doesn’t compromise on audio quality.

Seamless streaming with NFC and Bluetooth

Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth technology remove the need for wired connections and complex set-up. Simply touch your NFC-enabled device to the speaker for a quick, seamless connection, then start streaming your music collection. No NFC? No problem. Connect via Bluetooth and you’re ready to go.

Multiple music formats

Whether listening to new files in the premium High-Resolution Audio format or older songs as standard MP3’s, the A10 Series Walkman supports these popular formats for ease and convenience: MP3, WAV, AIFF, WMA, AAC, HE-ACC, FLAC, ALAC.

Long battery life

You will get approximately 30 hours of playtime with High-Resolution Audio files and approximately 50 hours with the standard MP3 format.

Great quality player with decent ui.

My criteria was getting a decent quality audio player.

Sony have always had good sound quality and this device is no different.
Only omission appears to be lack of dsd playback, but with the lack of titles at the moment I am happy to forgo that.

Had looked at the big brother the zx1, but can't really justify dropping £550 for an android powered audio player. This seems to have most of the features without the eye watering price of it's bigger brother.

Some of the features on this like upscaling and clear audio just tend to muddy the sound to my ears, I have 2 pairs of sony earphones, some ex30's and a pair of xbs-1 both sound very good, for the best sound I leave all the extra stuff turned off. This may well differ depending on what ear buds you have, but for me personally I like the sound clean and loud this delivers. It should be noted that I have found the volume to be very good compared to my last sony, which seemed to limit a lot more than this does, in fact it drives both sets of earphones very loud indeed, battery life is also very impressive.

If you have had a sony walkman in the last 5 years you will be familiar with the ui, the main extra feature I noticed over my previous player was the inclusion of bluetooth, handy for streaming to my hi-fi or my tv speakers.

It isn't the cheapest player about and you don't get earphones, but it is well made and with a 64 gig sd card(purchased separately) it is a useful media player with excellent quality sound.

I would suggest this to someone looking for better sound quality than an ipod but doesn't want dodgy ui which a lot of the Chinese players suffer from.

I purchased the 16GB model from the Sony Store for £169.95. This is considerably less compared to some other hi-fi media players available, including the Pono when it is released in 2015.

In my opinion this is a great piece of kit for anyone looking for a true hi-fi media player. It's old school by today's standards but it has a nice "retro" feel. This is all about the music and anyone wanting a touch screen with apps and games would be better off getting an iPod.

It doesn't have Wi-Fi but it does have Bluetooth with AptX. It comes with 16GB internal storage but I was able to expand this to 80GB by adding a 64GB card that costs about £25 on Amazon. There is support for videos, photos, podcasts, and even an FM radio.

There is no DRM and it will play FLAC, ALAC and most common file types including MP3 of course. Depending on the file type it can play up to 24bit 192kHz. It will happily play 192kHz music that I've purchased from Qobuz. To transfer music on a Mac just drag the songs/folders you want onto the provided app and that's it. There's even an option to automatically sync contents with a nominated folder. Haven't tried it out on a PC. Files can also be transferred over Bluetooth.

This Walkman sounds much better than any Apple device (even when playing lossless audio), and I'm saying that as an Apple fan. I have tried it with B&W P7s, Shure 535s, and Bose SoundLink Bluetooth (on ear) headphones. Even over Bluetooth the sound was much improved compared with my iPhone 5s. I should point out that sound quality can be quite subjective and people will always disagree.

Why buy the A15? The Walkman was my salvation since I had been wanting a high-capacity player to take as much music as possible on my travels but was reluctant to get involved with Apple players. I bought the Sony Android NWZ-F886 last year and had been frustrated on two fronts: the limited memory and the way the battery drained so quickly. The A15 solved both these issues with its internal 16gb (presumably less after its own operating software needs are taken into account) and great battery life since it is not Android based or internet linked. Although I would have preferred to have the US version with 64gb internal memory, the fact that the A15 can use MicroSDXC cards without any apparent limit in number and maybe not in memory size either, makes that a minor irritant. Having just bought the Hi-Res Sony Walkman NWZ-A15, and ideally wanting some quality closed back headphones to prevent sound leakage to those around me, I decided to get the new Sony MDR-1A headphones as an obvious match.

Capacity and ripping. I have loaded about 300 CDs as 320kbps mp3 files so far and used about 75% of my first 64gb card (I note that this is apparently only 59gb of actual usable memory). (LATER UPDATE - I bought a 128gb card and have now got over 700 CDs ripped at 320kbps, using 104gb and apparently still have 14gb of usable memory left.) I used the Sony software (Media Go) which allows you to rip CDs to FLAC too, unlike Windows Media Player. I was disappointed that album art was not always available (although 90%+ of the time it was) and have not found an intuitive way (yes, too lazy to read around) of finding and adding missing album art. Any suggestions?
