Take forty-one female songbirds from the vast past and spread their talent over seventy-three tracks and you get great artistic value on this budget-priced triple-disc set. Maybe the term “DIVA” is overworked but there are many here with Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Carmen MacRae and Shirley Bassey known for their feisty reputation but being great singers it matters not as it‘s their vocal style that counts! Amongst others, Lena Horne Dionne Warwick, Sarah Vaughan, Jane Morgan, and Julie London add their own individual vocal sparkle whilst the less-celebrated Anita Bryant, Ketty Lester, Maxine Brown, Gogi Grant, Lee Wiley, Jeri Southern and Helen Merrill add rarity to the mix.

Variable sound quality due to the different decades these songs were recorded and there’s no notes but such good value deserves my top rating.

The text at the bottom of the front cover describes the performers as the greatest female voices of all time. Much as I enjoy the singers and the music contained within, I must point out that such a description is somewhat of an exaggeration. The music covers the period from the thirties to the sixties, and is limited to jazz, pop and blues. It is also obvious from listening to this set that whoever chose the tracks has a marked preference for singers with clear voices over those with husky voices. You won't find Jo Stafford, Brenda Lee or a whole host of other husky-voiced singers here.

Within the limits described above, the is a lot of great music from some great singers. My particular favorite among the singers here is Jeri Southern, who is represented by just one track (Every Time We Say Goodbye), but I also particularly liked Swinging On A Star (June Christy) and It's All Right With Me (Lena Horne). So many great tracks here, but it would have been a stronger compilation with a few husky voices in there too. Still, at a budget price, it's great value for money.

What ever way you dress this one up it is a great set of recordings from in the main very well known female vocalists and what a fantastic bargain it is. All the tracks will be public domain. Music Digital are issuing some classy sets this year and it looks like more will follow. The sound transfers are very clear and this makes for comfortable listening.

The dictionary definition of a diva is a great female singer, and virtually all the subjects of this compilation merit the epithet. It offers 74 tracks ranging from jazz to popular song by an eclectic but mostly familiar company of song thrushes. plus some you may have forgotten, like Chris Connor and Jeri Southern. Most of the songs are standards, many of which originated on stage or screen, and that information, together with details of the accompaniments, could with advantage have been included in the tracklist. Disregard that minor quibble, because this is an excellent compilation.
