First off, let me state that this review is an entirely impartial attempt at helping those buyers who have yet to make up their minds about which of these two leading consoles to purchase. (I am neither a Microsoft nor a Sony “loyalist”, so bias will certainly not feature in this review).

In previous years I had opted for Playstations, owning the #1 and #2 consoles before switching to an Xbox 360 when the Playstation #3 seemed so uninspiring that it drove me towards a change. So this time around I was open-minded, and wanted to fulfil some criteria with my new piece of kit:

1. Reliability
2. Innovation
3. Focus on console gaming
4. No social or multi-player bias; I am a solo-gamer
5. Best current and future titles

Aesthetics:

I ordered both consoles almost concurrently, and the first to arrive was the Xbox One. Straight out of the box, it came well packaged and with HDMI and the usual Xbox mains converter-adapter. I do not think the same as some other reviewers have commented and think the style and design of the unit itself is solid-looking. The outer casing is two-tone black and with numerous vent slats to aid hard drive cooling. When in operation, the fan is relatively noiseless and the Xbox logo lights up in white on the front panel. It looks good on the shelf, in a TV cabinet and can be accommodated in such a place due to the fan cooling system.

The PS4 meanwhile has a strange angled concept in a very small and sleek unit, again two-tone black, and I have to say this is the poorer of the two designs. The angled wedge shape makes placement on some shelves awkward, and it is not advisable to store the console in a confined space anyway.

A fantastic value console that really compliments our home entertainment area!

There is a lot of bickering in the console market, some like green, some like blue. However, if you are looking for a fantastic, easy, accessible gaming solution for you and the family you really can't go wrong with either of the main consoles!

We bought the XBO and the PS4 to compliment the PS3, 360 and PC etc and can say without hesitation that BOTH of these systems have some fantastic exclusives and multiplatform games.

The XBO is a wonderful feat of engineering with some great media capabilities that keep the entire family entertained for hours On end. Initally I was going to cover the pros and cons of both consoles in my review, the differences between them etc... But after re reading my review, I decided to scrap that and say this...

In the last few months, I have played both the XBO and the PS4 and expereinced emotions, toward gaming, that I have not had since the days of my NES, SNES, Mastersystem, MegaDrive!

I feel that the last few generations or so has really pushed the gaming market in a strange direction, it became saturated with yearly releases of the same games, some getting worse after every release, it also went on far too long! By the end of the generation I thought I was done with gaming for good, I thought it was over for me...

Until I played games on BOTH of these consoles!
I was transformed back to a time where the creativity behind the game was the driving force, not the cash reward! This is going to be an exciting generation, regardless of system, we now have the ability to truly expereice what the developers Imaginations Intended.

So let's put aside the specs for now, let's forget the colour of the box, let's sit down, and marvel at the incredible gaming experiences currently available to us on BOTH of these consoles and make some Incredible gaming memories together!

INTRODUCTION

Launched in late 2013, the Xbox One is Microsoft's next generation console. Featuring an all new design, new internals as well as a new innovative operating system based on Microsoft's own Windows OS, the Xbox one features a larger focus on entertainment than the competing Playstation 4 and even it's own predecessor, the Xbox 360.

PACKAGING

For a company that has become so focused on bringing good design to many of it's products, I was surprised how bad the packaging was. Opening up the box, you have to cut numerous stickers just to get the cover surrounding the box off, and when you open up the box itself the amount of waste is atrocious.
There is understandably, for safety reasons, a huge amount of polystyrene covering up the console itself, but once you remove that and move onto the top layer containing the accessories and information documents, there is even more waste. The accessories that come with the device - the plug, power brick, HDMI cable, controller and headset - are all individually wrapped. Make sure your bins are empty before the arrival of your console because you'll spend the first ten minutes of Xbox One ownership will be spent throwing away all the rubbish that came with it.
After watching unboxing videos of the Surface tablet - also designed and made by Microsoft - I'm sure they can produce better, more minimal packaging than this, even considering the enormous size of this system.

DESIGN

Once you've removed all the packaging, the great size of the Xbox One is immediately apparent. Compared to my old Xbox 360 Elite, a design now around ten years old at the time of writing this (2015), the Xbox One is enormous, reminiscent of an old VCR player.
