The Polyphonic Spree began July 15, 2000. Short version: Do you like The Polyphonic Spree? Do you like Christmas songs? If you answered yes to both of these questions you'll love this album.

Longer version: I've loved The Polyphonic Spree since their first album was released, and when I heard they were recording a set of Christmas songs this year I thought that this sounded like the perfect fit - their uplifting, almost choral, almost gospelly, almost like something from a musical sound mixed with those songs many of us love so much.

It sounds almost exactly as you'd imagine. From the opening instrumental, the delightfully daft "A Working Elf's Theme", through the likes of "Winter Wonderland" it works wonderfully well. Some of the arrangements are instrumental, some a little slower and darker than you'd maybe expect, but from start to finish it is an absolute joy, and I can imagine decorating the house with this playing in December. Personally my favourite track is the slightly woozy, almost sinister-sounding "Silver Bells".

The big question for me was how does it compare to surely the greatest Christmas album ever, the mighty "CHRISTMAS" by Low? Well, as much as that album is brooding and atmospheric as only Low can do, this is happy and uplifting in that typical Spree style.

Oh, and as the product description doesn't include the track listing, here it is:
1. A Working Elf's Theme
2. Winter Wonderland
3. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)
4. Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
5. Silent Night
6. Silver Bells
7. Do You Hear What I Hear?
8. Carol of the Drum (Little Drummer Boy)
9. White Christmas
10. Let It Snow
11. It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
12. Silver Bells (Reprise)
13. Holidaydream

Great mix of old songs and some new ones from the Polyphonic Spree.
This cd will be on loop this Christmas and until their new album comes out next year :-)

Delightful, creative and perfect in every way 29 Nov. 2012
By Brian Collins - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'll admit that I'm a pretty big fan of The Polyphonic Spree. It's hard not to cheer for the ultimate musical underdog... a band impossibly large, that never gets radio play since you can't really figure out what genre to plug them into. Holidaydream is lush at times, simple and precious at others, even dark and a little dreary that perfectly reflects the hypothetical grumpy dad who's putting toys together at 4am on Christmas Eve. (Not me... I'd never procrastinate like that). Give it a listen.

Lovely renditions of classics 30 Oct. 2012
By Gail P. Fountain - Published on Amazon.com
Tim DeLaughter has been singing Christmas songs at every one of the ten Holiday Extravaganzas (aka The Christmas Shows) the band has performed, usually surrounded by a stage full of children. Here he recorded those songs in dreamy, slow versions with harp and percussion in a manner that's quite inspiring and listenable.

Unique sound won't please everybody 27 Dec. 2012
By P. Snyder - Published on Amazon.com

Bought this CD based on the review in a national magazine. Interesting dissonant sound, but before it got half way through our first hearing while decorating the Christmas tree my wife declared that she'd had enough and I should change discs. Doesn't convey a sense of celebration.

It is everything the Holidays were meant to be. 1 Dec. 2012

It is perfect. It is Polyphonic. What more could you ask for?
If you are a fan, you will love this.
If you are not a fan, well I'm not sure why anyone is not a fan, so I can't really help you there.
Makes me want to put on a white robe and dance through fields of daises, or pine trees.

Wow! 25 Jan. 2013

One of the most captivating Christmas discs I've ever run across. Breathtakingly beautiful vocals with lots of twists on both the new and the old favorites. I still haven't stopped listening to it and it is near the end of January!
