5.0 out of 5 stars Alan Titchmarsh 27 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a very good book for what it is explaining I have recently cleared a corner of my garden that has parts in shade. The book gives lots of varieties of plants that will do well in shade and partial shade not just the usual foliage plants ie Hostas that everyone says.
I am looking forward to trying some of the varieties listed over the next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable advice in a logical format 2 Aug. 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is set out in a very clear way which is rarer than you'd think in a reference book. Whilst the chapters on planting & propogation are very similar to the ones in other books the sections on types of shade, microclimates and designing for shade were good, simple & easily understandable. The 'plants for shade' section is excellent; set out in exactly the way that makes sense and as a consequence is becoming really well thumbed already. If you are trying to sort out a problem area of garden this is a brilliant book. Mr Titchmarsh writes with the openess of someone who knows his subject thoroughly & is happy to help & share as opposed to the many gardener writers who try to blind you with science in attempt to reinforce their (obvious) sense of superiority.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost everything I wanted to know 21 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I wish I'd stopped with just this book, when I bought several recently on this topic!

It has all the information that I wanted, presented in an easy fashion. Not found anything so useful this side of the excellent series by Dr Hessayon. Highly recommended on all areas - suitable plants, maintenance, design.

5.0 out of 5 stars gardening books 11 Feb. 2011
Format:Paperback
The Alan Titchmarsh How to Garden Books are very useful to have on the bookshelf. They are easy to use for people with no gardening knowledge or intermediate gardeners who want help in certain areas. They are a modern replacement for the Hessayson series which are good but out of date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gardening in the Shade 27 Oct. 2010
Format:Paperback
A very good book, it goes into different types of shade, and the way most garden areas are shaded for some part of the day.

Very practical, well laid out and nicely illustrated, it answers the questions about what to grow where. A very useful book.
