Make no compromises

Why compromise video quality? Precious moments like your child’s first smile don’t come every day, after all. What you need is a high quality high definition camcorder that can capture those special memories as they happen and preserve the intensity of the original moment. A camcorder that’s small and light that films razor-sharp Full HD 1080p video and also takes exceptionally good still images – at the same time if necessary. Something offering better sound, higher zoom and longer recording so you can catch the action just the way you want it, whether you’re sightseeing in Madrid or filming the guests sipping bubbly at your cousin’s wedding.

Sharp and natural photos, even when enlarged

Well, wait no longer. Here’s a camcorder that makes many sophisticated cameras green with envy. It’s so good, even photos blown up to A3 size or played back on your big screen TV look great. No more fuzzy faces, diluted detail or blurred backgrounds. No more hammering away at the delete button because you’re disappointed with image quality. The secret? Loads of pixels – over 24 million of them to be precise. More than enough to make impressive large prints or crop a picture to focus on something specific without losing definition. And when you want to close in on something far away, you can zoom in up to 10 times. Just what you need to catch that heron holding court on the island in the lake.

Shoot Full HD 1920x1080p video with a high sensitivity Exmor R CMOS sensor and NightShot – increased detail and clarity even in low light.

See it how it is

Even better, you can frame the shot exactly how you want it using the electronic viewfinder. You see the actual digital image in the eyepiece rather than the approximation you see with an optical viewfinder. Every shot is precise and true which is important when you’re closing in on fine details and want to get the picture just perfect.

Just like being there

Switch to video and you’ll be ready to shoot gloriously detailed high definition footage that’s brimming with colour and life.* This camcorder captures four times the detail of a standard definition camcorder. That means everything you shoot looks sharper and clearer with vivid, lifelike colours and rich tones. Just try capturing the view on a sunny morning in the countryside – you’ll see every blade of grass, all the veins in a leaf and perfectly defined cloud formations.

Film day or night

How about those candle-blowing moments in the dark at your child’s birthday party? We can all remember shooting the kids as they cluster around the cake, only to be royally disappointed with the dark, grainy results. With this camcorder, you’ll have no such problem as it includes an Exmor R CMOS sensor, one of the most sophisticated low light sensors available. And if that’s not enough, you also have NightShot, a clever Sony technology that uses a series of special LEDs around the lens to enable it to see in the dark.

Sound that’s all around

It’s fine shooting in HD but how about sound? Can you hear your sister whispering her wedding vows, those nervously played sonatas at the school music concert and the fine clinking of flutes at your birthday bash? With a highly sensitive microphone, the same S-Master amplifier and Clear Phase audio technology found in Sony Hi-Fi systems and MP3 players, not to mention Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound, this camcorder perfectly reproduces the most powerful sounds and subtlest of noises. Hear everything loud and clear. Your movies come to life and take you straight back to the moment you first shot the scene.

Keeps things super steady

Camera shake can ruin a good picture or movie, especially when you’re filming while moving or at high zoom. No need to worry anymore. Balanced Optical SteadyShot is our best ever anti-shake technology, designed to keep images super steady across the entire zoom range. Everything stays natural and blur-free even when filming while walking around town, watching sports or closing in on a distant subject. And because Optical SteadyShot is always active, composing your shot on the LCD while moving into the best possible position is a doddle.

Makes transferring data really quick

When you’re back from holiday, you’ll want to transfer all your new video and photos straight to your laptop. It’s quick and easy using PlayMemories software – just connect the camcorder, transfer across, then upload to the web or share on social networking sites. You can also send video direct to your external hard disc drive without even having to think about your PC, if you want. And with a built-in USB cable, charging is a breeze, wherever in the world you find yourself.

No point in squinting

We’ve all done it or laughed at someone else doing it. Squinting through a tiny screen to frame a shot or review footage. This camcorder refuses to put you in that ridiculous situation by including a large three inch touch screen with a wide viewing angle. Compose your scenes with ease - menus and settings are just a tap away. With outstanding detail, high contrast and less reflection, gathering round the beach bar with your family to share your great shots is so much more fun.

Great shots made easy

Selecting the perfect settings for a particular scene can be daunting. No need to worry with this camcorder as Intelligent Auto (iAUTO) does all that for you. How? By automatically recognising up to 60 scenes and adjusting settings for the best possible picture. So if you’re shooting mountains, colours and focus will be optimised for landscapes. Best of all, iAuto is quick and easy to activate - just flip open the screen, touch the start icon and shoot.

Let’s face it, we like smiles

They’re natural, spontaneous, here one moment, gone the next. You just don’t have time to set up for a quick smile shot so this camcorder does it all for you. Smile Shutter automatically takes pictures when people smile – great for brides and grooms, birthday celebrations and baby chuckles. Face Detection automatically adjusts exposure, focus and skin tone so everyone looks more natural. After all, the better you look, the more you like your photos!

Your own short movies at the touch of a button

If only there was a quick and easy way to turn your latest holiday video into a professional looking movie, without having to spend ages slaving over a PC. You know, with transition effects and background music and a nice opening sequence. Highlight Playback does it all for you in a jiffy. Access directly with one touch from the Event Browse playback interface and easily create your movie using selected pictures and videos. Save as a new movie and burn to DVD or upload to social networking sites via PlayMemories Home so all your friends and family can enjoy your latest adventure.

* By shooting at 50 Full HD frames a second, every scene looks sharp and clear with vivid, lifelike colours and rich tones.

I spent absolutely ages reviewing to make sure I purchased the best product around and I must say now I've selected and used this product, I'm sure it is the best available. I've previously had Panasonic sd900 and canon camcorders. Heres the interesting thing. The best panasonic camcorders are sharper (sd900 and Hcx900 which by the way are practically identical). For a while I got preoccupied with sharpness. Sharpness means if you turn a shampoo bottle around and then film the smallest print across the other side of the room at max zoom and see which writing is sharper. However the Sony is so much better in a number of different areas that mean inside of it being slightly less sharp that it's still a better camcorder. First off the balanced optical stabiliser system. It's mind blowing. The best available on the market by a mile. You can actually record very watchable film walking around. Miles better than canon or Panasonic. This is the only camcorder Sony make with this system all the other sonys have an inferior system. Secondly it's colours are just so much better than Panasonic. They look so much more natural. Thirdly it has a built in light. Its well done so that indoors it doesn't look like you have a light on it just gives you enough light to make the pictures look perfect. Fourthly it records better in low light than any other camcorder I've seen. Fifth, it has IR mode for filming in pitch black. Six, I don't know an' other camera with as wide an angle as this. On max wide it does go a little 'fish eye' but I guess that's unavoidable.

Two little negatives for the record but not anything to detract from this being the best camcorder on sale today. Slightly heavier than competition but this is the price to pay for best stabiliser in the market.

I bought this camera as a replacement to a Stolen Panasonic sd700 - and immediate found this one to far simpler in operation. It seems to be ready to film quicker than the old model: and the controls come far more easily to hand. The SD card slot is, other sockets and things, are mostly well placed. The focus ring (multi-function) knob is rather fiddling though, and is difficult to control with any finesse: a shame as it offers a good range.

In operation this is a comfortable camera which handles well. the Slightly wider lens is a bonus in tight spaces, while the zoom is perfect for most situations. The optical stabilisation is highly effective: there is hardly a sign of shake or chitter even at the most extreme end of the zoom. Excellent. The view finder is practical and a really good size. It is bright enough in the sun too!

The pictures from this camera, even when filming in very low light situations, are sublime. It really is astoundingly good where it truly matters. I have not had the chance to try the slow-mo function - and can't think when I would have the opportunity to do so either. Still, with the high quality out put that doesn't bother me too much. My only disappointment is the lack of a 'time laps' option. I made extensive use of this feature on the panasonic and am now missing it! Then again, this camera out performs the Panny on picture, so loss of TL is not really a hardship.

The material loaded nicely into AVID Symphony so the codec issue i had with the Panasonic when I first used it did not arise. I imagine on a PC the editing software that came with the camera would have benefits, but as a Mac user I was short changed as usual. On the whole this is an excellent camera which delivers magnificent video: just as you'd expect from one of the worlds leading video manufacturers.

Okay, now this is not a cheap consumer video camera but boy does it pack in a lot of tech.
The first thing that makes this stand out from the crowd is the 'Balanced Optical Steadyshot'
which in my opinion is probably the best image stabilisation that I have seen on a video camera
With a little practice it will give you rock steady tripod shots even at zoom.
This will save you hours trying to stabilise the footage in post.
Add to that 'Zebra Striping' and 'Focus Peaking', manual override on most of the settings, Infra-red mode in total darkness and a bright LED for fill light.
Sony have really gone to town with this little camera.
The IQ is very sharp at the wide end (wider than most other VCs @24mm eqiv)getting softer at maximum zoom, but still very usable.
The colour rendition is remarkably accurate and well saturated.
The sound quality from the built in microphone is very good indeed, picking up no breath, zoom or focus noise.

Extra considerations:
Get yourself a larger battery as the standard battery will not last too long
Buy an external charger as charging via USB just isn't right
Try not to use the still photo mode as the JPG noise is a bit overbearing. You will get better results from a compact
Get some kind of case or cover for the lens as the protective shutter vanes damage too easily.

Overall though this is a great camera and I will be happy to give it 5 Stars and full recommendation.
