I run Mac OS X Lion, and am using this drive for Time Machine backups.
Reliable 2TB disk drive, no errors at all so far, fingers crossed. Also it is very slim, doesn't take up much space. It is also very quiet, only occasionally you hear it click on and off.

The box says it's made in Japan. Which is always reassuring.

I have bought two of these drives in August 2011; couldn't resist when the price was only £64! One of them has been on 24/7 ever since and the other one is for backup. As usual, I have formatted them and started using them without any problems. I now have 8 Buffalo drives, ranging from 250GB to 2.00TB and they are all still 'alive'. I think the oldest one is about 6 years old.

The only negative thing about these particular drives is that now and then they can get a bit noisy; in fact, they are the noisiest of the whole lot - not sure why, maybe the design? The noise comes and goes and it is not a problem, more a curiosity, as the older drives are so quiet.

I know some people have had problems with their Buffalo drives; either I have been lucky with my 8 or it may indicate that the brand is actually pretty reliable on the whole. I had considered other makes every time I needed a new drive but in the end I had bought another Buffalo because it is what I know.

I was given this drive (HD-LXU3) as a birthday present last June (2013) but after upgrading to Windows 8.1, it would drop offline from Windows Explorer after about 2-3 minutes of not being accessed and I'd have to request the password to get it to come to life again. Very annoying and not how a HDD should behave.

I contacted Buffalo about this and we've been in email contact ever since with them asking me to try different things on the drive and also to use it on different computers. It worked perfectly on a friend's laptop running Vista.

At one point the drive developed a fault and data could not be accessed at all and I lost about 2tbs of photos, music and movie files.

Buffalo classed the drive as faulty and agreed to let me return it to Amazon for a replacement which I did a few weeks ago. This drive also had the offline issue and I kept asking Buffalo for an explanation but nothing helpful was forthcoming. After the test on my friend's laptop, I did some detective work on the MSN website myself which led me to believe that the drive was not compatible with Win8.1

I 'suggested' this to Buffalo last week and FINALLY they replied as follows : "That unit does not support Windows 8.1. If you are not happy with the product you can return it to your retailer but we don't issue you return form."

NOT HAPPY !!! I'd say I'm not happy as I've already filled the replacement with 2tb of data and have no other place to move it to now. Why didn't they tell me about this incompatibility issue months ago and certainly before getting Amazon to replace the faulty drive with a similar one. I'd have asked for a refund if I'd known and bought a different drive !

So I have given the product a very generous 4 stars as it's fast and good value for money - just don't currently buy it if you run Win8.1

After some research settled on this unit to replace a smaller external drive. Installation was simple and data transfer very fast when set up.
Problems began however as soon as my PC would enter sleep mode at which point the unit would power off and, with no power switch, the only way to power up was to physically unplug the unit and replug it in again. I contacted Buffalo European tech support thinking I had a faulty unit who checked and, to my great surprise, told me that this was how the unit functioned!

Although I leave my PC on all the time, just entering power save mode will close down this HDD. Given that I wanted to stream media from the device, the last thing I wanted was to have to run to the room with the PC and start plugging wires in and out every time I wanted to watch a movie! Returned to Amazon under 7 day no quibble policy and ordered myself a WD unit instead.

I'm sure it's a great unit but entirely unsuitable for my use so beware if you might be doing the same. I have advised Buffalo to make this point clear in the product description as I am sure many users will have the same issue.

I looked through reviews on Amazon and elsewhere of a lot of external hard drives and there was a very similar range for all of them: 80-90% four or five stars and fully satisfied, 10-20% one star with horror stories. Just a few had 30% bad reviews and I excluded them. But even those with the very best comments and largest percentage of excellent reviews still got some stinkers and strident complaints. Nothing was a clear winner. Obviously all external hard drives carry some risk of failure. Particular brands (even word-leaders) are no guarantee. It's just luck.

Apart from the basic percentage of stright-out product failure, the worst reviews seemed to come from those people who had the most specific requirements, often known in advance to be going to necessitate some modification of the product as supplied; or with a complaint involving the need to do so to achieve a personal objective. I wanted a bog-standard external hard drive for backing up a large quantity of data on my PC, having lost valuable records in the past through irremediable PC hard disc failure. Once things have been copied I don't expect to use the external hard drive very much, or very often. My PC is quite new, but is UBS 2.0, so I didn't want the complications (or cost) of any USB 3.0 facility. I accept that there will be speed limitations with UBS 2.0. I did need a large size - two 1TB drives, or one 2TB or larger drive was required. Obviously the cost and convenience of a 2TB drive made it preferable to two 1TB drives, and the reviews did not suggest any satisfaction differences across sizes (although performance might not be as fast).

I chose the Buffalo drive because of its size, spec and cost. It was, as far as I could see, one of the best value in terms of bytes per pound.
