Biography

"Our problem isn't a dearth of ideas, but rather a surplus," says Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. "For the first time, we are completely free of any recording contracts and obligations. We find ourselves writing and recording more than we have in years, our studio feels more and more like home, and the band now has twenty-five years under the hood and is sounding so darn ... Product Description

The idea behind Sing In My Meadow was to create an album that referenced an aspect of our live performances that we don't dig into very much in our studio recordings. We wanted the album to revolve around those psychedelic, blues-inspired forays we are so fond of exploring on stage. So this past February the live band (the four of us plus Jeff Bird) gathered in our studio to record all of these songs over a four day period. We approach them all live-off-the-floor: nasty and dirty and disturbing the cold winter's nights peace. We tried to channel Miles at the Isle of Wight, deep in his Bitches Brew phase; Captain Beefheart and his Mirror Man psychoses; The Birthday Party live at the Electric Ballroom circa 1981 (Margo, Al and I were in that audience); Neil and Crazy Horse in the back room at SIR ....overdriven and thick with electricity. (Michael Timmins)

The Cowboy Junkies' Nomad series of albums is proving to be something of a gem. Three albums in, and Sing In My Meadow, the second release this year, features a set of electric bluesy material involving the kind of guitar jams that are an established part of the Junkies live performances. While a release of this nature may suggest an element of self-indulgence, the resulting album contains an all too brief eight songs which never stray too far beyond their own template. Key to them all is the scratchy grunge sound that the Junkies have deployed intermittently over the years, but here it is given free rein. The result is a duelling guitar sound that often recalls Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Seemingly at odds with the purity of Margo Timmins voice, the confection somehow works. Timmins' voice is in fine fettle, rising piercingly through the sound melee, but never quite being defeated by it.

Opening song 'Continental Drift' sets the tone with a loping drum beat set against distorted foghorn-like harmonica and scratchy guitar from which Margo Timmins' voice emerges with dispassionate coolness. 'It's Heavy Down Here' follows with a slow-build intro that leads into an ominous sounding aural assault of wailing guitars and vocals. Best of all is the title track 'Sing In My Meadow' which positively zings and spits its way out of the speakers with a ringing clarity to its production and gorgeous underpinning melodic groove. At just over 40 minutes, the new album is unexpectedly economical, but chock full of ideas and decent tunes.

The Nomad series of 4 albums reflects the Cowboy Junkies' desire to mark their 25th anniversary with something that demonstrates that they have the 'energy and inspiration to pull it off'.

The Canadian band Cowboy Junkies have long been a favourite of mine, with their dreamy, country and folk influenced sound. This year, however, like Lucinda Williams, they turned up the volume and brought out an album, Sing in My Meadow, which sounds like something from the 1970s - a jam session of loud, pounding, distorted guitars, with Margo Timmins' vocals floating over the top. I suspect many of their usual fans won't like it, but I love it.

The album is without doubt loud, if you are still wanting the Trinity session, this is not it. However, it's the sound of a band having fun subverting their image & sounding much as they do at some of their larger gigs.
I have seen the band many times & in large(ish)venues like Shepherds Bush Empire with a large bar that never closes there is no market for the really quiet stuff. Throughout their career there have been loud songs even loud albums; 2001's Open is probably the most Rock, before this, but the quality of the songs remains high.
The intent of the Nomad project was to make 4 very different albums.
I like this a lot & would it as their best since 'One Soul now'
It's a little different, try it you might like it. It is a product of the bands many influences some of which as previously mentioned are Rock bands. Looking forward to the imminent arrival of Vol4!

I have been following Cowboy Junkies since their first album, The Trinity Session, was released. I really love their music and sounds. They released several good albums which I have enjoyed, but to me, they could not exceed the quality of their first album.
Sing In My Meadow: The Nomad Sessions - Vol.3 is the one which overcome their first album for the first time throughout their career.
I really love this album.
