I have been a fervent admirer of Nicholas Pevsner for many years and believe that he gave us a lasting testimonial to his dogged determination to show us the incredible richness of English architecture. He covered the entire country to include cities, towns, villages and - sometimes - hamlets to show us the major points of interest to be found in each. To be sure he does not praise everything, indeed he can be quite derogatory if the occasion calls for it, but it is in a good cause.

I brought "Sussex" for a friend of mine who has moved there and wanted an excellent all round guide to what can be found in the county and so far cannot praise it high enough. The language is somewhat dated she feels but, as I told her, it was written 50 years ago. She was thrilled that there was an entry for the small town where she now lives and nowadays can be found in secret, out of the way places clutching her Pevsner and reading all about the place concerned . Well done, Nicholas!
