Biography

Biography by Jason Ankeny

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the British group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback which served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine ... Product Description

* Inspired by hip-hop, the vision the Reid Brothers had in mind for their third studio album was a sound that fused rock’n’roll with the latest technology. Automatic experimented with drum machines, samples and sequenced bass, but never lost sight of their gift for great pop hooks and buzzsaw guitars. A tight and concise album bursting with catchy melodies, this is probably the easiest entry point into The Jesus And Mary Chain back catalogue for the casual listener. * This deluxe expanded edition features all the non-album b-sides, the pre-Automatic Sidewalking EP, outtakes, the complete BBC Radio Sessions the band recorded in this period, live tracks previously unreleased on CD, and rarities such as the 1988 re-record of early b-side "Just Out Of Reach" and a radio advertisement for the US leg of the Automatic tour. * The 50-minute DVD features the promo videos for all the singles, the band-made film for "Just Out Of Reach” (first time on DVD), and previously unreleased archival TV appearances, including two complete live performances from SNUB TV, an interview at their rehearsal studio for Rapido, and two MTV features, including an entertainingly confrontational interview with the Reid brothers by a hapless VJ. * The 24 page booklet contains exclusive new interviews that tell the band’s story in their own words, alongside lyrics, rare memorabilia and previously unpublished photos.

I was very pleased when I saw my favourite J&M Chain album now available with amazing extra tracks and dvd. I have the original Vinyl album from 1989. Automatic is just an incredible album, maybe not as popular of fans of their earlier stuff but I love it. Definate 5 stars.

First review?? REALLY?? 15 Aug. 2012
By Larry Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Simply put, why do people slag this album off?? Loved it in 1989 and it sounds just as vital today, with some of their most notable songs ever in "Head On" (the Pixies covered that song on "Trompe Le Monde") and "Blues From A Gun". Maybe it was the drum machines?? If anything, that factor is what gives this album its unique flavour. In the liner notes, the Reids said the goal was to mix their noisy guitar pop with hiphop technology, as they were into rap music at the time...and ya know what?? It works, and if anything, it makes the album a fresh listen in 2012. This reissue, like the other 5 in the series, are essential and perfectly done, nothing left out...singles, EPs, B-sides, even the way-cool "Surfin' USA" 12-inch, and the DVD is icing on the cake with promo vidclips, TV appearances, live stuff, interviews, etc...the standard for all reissue programs...and the JAMC are BACK!! Seeing em in NYC, Sept 14th baby!! Forget the Smiths...the JAMC are they greatest band to emerge from the UK in the 80s all the way...and I stand by that statement!!

Totally Awesome !!! 11 Oct. 2012

Finally they got it right with the new recently released deluxe catalog of Jesus & Mary Chain.
I wasn't a fan of the previous release, the dual disc sets as it's easy to scratch one side of a disc and that could affect both sides since the label acts as a protective cover for the cd.
Now it seems more are taking the cues from Suede, their catalog has been the finest deluxe treatments yet, each of the sets come with the full
album on disc 1, filled with b sides and demos from disc 1 to 2. The brits loved b-sides so there's always plenty of that action.
The 3rd disc is tv appearances and music videos. Although, unlike the Suede sets, it would've been nice to include a complete concert of the band
during it's heyday.
The set is better on these than ever before, well since the vinyl came out at least.
Well done and more need to come out in this format !

A.u.t. -- oh, my goodness 8 Mar. 2013

Will never understand why this album gets such short shrift from JAMC Nation. Best of all Reid Bros. worlds -- snarling guitars, beautifully delicate ballads, etc. -- as far as this fan's concerned, and that includes their hip-hop beats. Nice having the b-sides handy with this collection, too, a power of positive thinking.
Screaming Automatic Pain!!! 22 April 2015

Well I've loved this album for a long time. It's the second in an immaculate trilogy of albums by JAMC. So when I saw that edsel records was giving JAMC's catalog the stellar reissue treatment that they do so well, I had to get a copy. Edsel did the same reissue packaging with Suede, and those, too, are now essential; the quintessential versions. Edsel gives you 2 cds, encompassing the original album, along with b-sides and rarities, a bonus DVD, and amazing booklet and packaging.
JAMC's Automatic reissue includes the legendary Sidewalking single, and some great b-sides, including Penetration and Deviant Slice. I couldn't possibly rate this high enough.
