1.0 out of 5 stars Undecipherable translation 21 Oct. 2008
It is very difficult to comment on the content of this book as it is translated so badly it basically is not in English at all if you're Italian then I'm sure the original must be very interesting. If you're English do not waste your time or money on this book. They obviously didn't pay for the book to be translated so why should you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Would be five stars with a different translator! 8 Oct. 2008
I agree with other reviewers who have praised the book but not the translation.

This should be a five-star book: some top Italian coaches explaining drills for all aspects of the game, plus commentaries on formations from the likes of Arrigo Sacci, Marcello Lippi et al.

I can only assume the translator was Italian and convinced, wrongly, that his command of English was up to the job. Perhaps the American publisher was not well versed in football and so didn't pick up on how unintelligible some of the passages were.

Some of this book you can read and understand, some of it you can understand it if you read the sentence three or four times. Sometimes, though, it might as well be Ancient Greek.

I've opened a page at random - this is about neutralising attempts at goal:

"As the ball is shot, the players move back with a tactical cross-step run. They don't move back with a regular run (it would not be very fast and balanced), but with a run set on the side and being ready to change direction, pivoting on the back foot."

Eh? Could this be why England players are having trouble with Fabio's exotic formations?

Seriously, this is a potentially excellent book that deserves a retranslation and reprint. Perhaps a British publisher could take up the case?

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Tactics... 9 July 2008
By Amazon Customer VINE VOICE
... and wonderful diagrams. Just wish I could make head or tail of the text. The translation is just very poor and lets down what could possibly be an excellent book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Diagrams on a Kindle illegible for me 6 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book does not read like it has been edited by someone who spoke fluent English. But there are many things I could forgive in a book, and unfortunately one of them is not illegible presentation. The football pitch diagrams are tiny on a 7inch kindle - about 10% of the screen page - and cannot be rescaled upwards with the text. The annotations are next to impossible to make out. Given that liberal use is made of diagrams to illustrate the tactics it makes the whole task of reading this ebook an eyesight test. Perhaps changing the diagram scale is a recurring problem when translating hard/paperbacks with diagrams to ebook format. Which is a shame because there could be some interesting insights in there...

An excellent reference book that deal with many of the common football philosophies and how top level coaches approach the fundamentals of these tactics.

The translation from Italian to English is ropey at best but you can still fully understand what is being suggested and the diagrams help immensely. I would not be put off by the translation as you just can't get this level of detail in a book by a british author.

Definatley a book to have on the shelf for all open minded coaches.

2.0 out of 5 stars Soccer tactics in detail 6 Aug. 2008
Italys top coaches are asked a range of questions on football tactics such as , neutralising deep penetrating runs, marking against crosses, midfield with 4/3/5 players...there are 180 different situations that are analysed in this way. It is not light reading but very detailed.
