Book Description

It should be a straightforward missing persons case... until the Mob are involved. An outstanding Myron Bolitar novel from the SUNDAY TIMES bestselling author of SIX YEARS.

Myron Bolitar might have a slightly dubious past, but he knows how to handle himself and is doing just fine as a sports agent.

And then he meets Brenda Slaughter, one of the hottest female sports stars around. She's gorgeous, funny and single, and also seems to have mislaid her agent.

But when her father disappears, and the Mob starts leaning on her, it soon becomes apparent that potent forces are at work. And the more Myron tries to help, the closer he gets to losing his heart - and his life...

    Amazon Review

What keeps a reader turning the pages of a thriller? Strong characters, certainly-- Chandler gripped our attention through the most impenetrable plots with his powerfully-drawn characters. But narrative ingenuity is the ace card for most of the top writers in the genre, and it's here that Coben really excels. Of course, having a novel and unusual protagonist is a highly desirable asset, and in Myron Bolithar, his fast-thinking and vulnerable sports agent, Coben has the perfect centre for his labyrinthine plot. Living down his dubious past, Myron finds himself conned into babysitting Brenda Slaughter, the hottest female sports star around. But when her father disappears, and the mob starts leaning on her, Myron finds himself undertaking duties far more dangerous than the average sports agent ever faces. And with his old friend, the urbane and deadly Windsor Lockwood, Myron is up against very powerful men who'll go to any lengths to protect their secrets. Coben's dialogue is studded with caustic wit, and the chinks in his hero's armour (particularly on the romantic front) make his helter-skelter tale a real delight. Even those readers without a trace of an interest in sport will be firmly on board from page one, with the feisty Brenda making the perfect foil for the beleaguered Myron. Coben's American success shows every sign of being replicated in the UK. --Barry Forshaw

'The world needs to discover Harlan Coben. He's smart, he's funny, and he has something to say.' (Michael Connolly )

'ONE FALSE MOVE has it all: wonderful characters, a dandy plot, nail-biting suspense, and Harlan Coben's wicked humor. I had a great time!' (Susan Isaacs )

'Coben deftly manages the tightrope trick of blending wit and humour with genuine poignancy and pain. To borrow a baseball phrase, this is a slam dunk of a book.' (Val McDermid )

5.0 out of 5 stars Another in the Myron Bolitar Series 26 Jun. 2007
By J. Chippindale TOP 500 REVIEWER
    Format:Audio CD
Harlan Coben continues to prove that he is one of the best thriller writers around at the moment. A page turner is a much used phrase but in this case it is really appropriate. The author's books are always so well structured and his character's well rounded. He is obviously comfortable with his style and ability and this transmits itself to the reader making the reading of his books sheer pleasure from start to finish. Coben has now got a string of best selling crime novels behind him and all I can say is that I hope he continues to write for many years to come. The author lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.

It's been a while since an accident ended Myron Bolitar's sporting career, but he is now making quite a success of being a sports agent.. He has plenty of contacts and it keeps him around many of the sports stars he competed against. Life is good and he is doing just fine, that is until he meets Brenda Slaughter, one of the hottest female sports stars around. She is one hell of a looker, funny and single and as luck would have it seems to have mislaid her agent.

But when her father disappears and Mob start to lean on her, it soon becomes apparent that potent forces are at work and Myron is soon plunged into a world of deceit and death. Hopefully it won't be his own.

    3.0 out of 5 stars A rare Coben disappointment 19 Mar. 2010
    Format:Paperback
I have now read all Coben's books and await Caught out in UK in April 2010.
I am a big fan of Myron Bolitar and the gang i.e. Win, Esperanza, Big Cindy et al.
This book centres on the world of professional Women's basketball and the central character is Brenda Slaughter (odd choice of name!) who is a black basketball phenomenon.
She and Myron get all gooey eyed, but nice gooey eyed.
However her father's recently gone missing and she still wonders about her long lost Mother.
Alot goes on. THe Aches make a brief return. A local and hugely wealthy and influential politician and his family spread their powers in a variety of different directions and when Bolitar pokes his nose in their business he enlists his little and large henchmen to make sure Bolitar gets the message to keep his nose out of it.
Jessica is around and about but only fleetingly.
You also learn more about his parents and their Jewish roots and there's a very touching scene between Myron and his father.
There's alot social comment underneath the story which is interesting but didn't need to be spelled out.
However the story wasn't rich enough for me. The characters were too transparent and whilst it took me a while to work out what happened in the end somehow I didn't really care.
Most Coben books really engage you and Bolitar can carry a weak story by his own character.
This time it didn't hit the spot for me and I crawled over the finishing line with a sense of ennui and disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Coben at his worst 14 Mar. 2011
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Being a massive Coben fan, I never thought possible giving up reading one of his books. However, there's a first time for everything and this book hasn't worked for me at all. I had to stop reading it after 90 pages as I was finding the plot and characters totally uninteresting and boring. This is not a page turner like all his other books so I presume this was his very first novel. I am not a big fan of Bolitar but somehow the other books about him have been rather interesting so I can't put my finger on what really fails on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harlan does it again 2 Aug. 2004
    By A Customer
    Format:Paperback
Well, what can i say? He's done it again. Harlan has written a fantastic novel, full of surprise and witty dialogue. It picks up where number 4 in the series left off. This time he has to look after a women - Brenda Slaughter but then her father disappears.
Well i cant go into much detail as i will disturb the plot. But wow - Coben has done it again.
A typical Myron Bolitar novel - with more twists, turns than a rollercoaster - looking for a crime - thriller then this is the book for you. This is book 5 in the series - so if you havent brought any of the first four Myron Bolitar novels then i would suggest you buy those first and then come on to this - 10 outta 10.
