Format: Audio CD
Although very loosely based on historical facts, Donizetti's opera can be one of the most exciting vocal works in the hands of right singers - fortunately this is the case here! The opera demands two virtuoso singers for the principal soprano roles and Agnes Baltsa as Queen Elizabeth I never fails to excite with her interpretations and always gives us plenty mustard and none of the ham. She dominates her every scene with her declamatory vocal attack and viscerally exciting singing(in fact, the set is worth buying for her portrayal alone - listen to her venomous interjections as Mary begs for forgiveness!). Gruberova is not a personal favourite although she does provide an excellent foil for Balta's Elisabetta I - she sounds particularly effective in the fictional confrontation scene between the two queens where the sparks REALLY fly as the great monarch is insulted beyond belief! However, it has to be said that Donizetti's Mary Stuart does not portray the Queen of Scots as she is depicted in history - I'm sure that she would never have begged for mercy from Elizabeth I! Francisco Araiza as Leicester is an excellent mediator between the two Queens; at one point loyal subject and another dedicated lover. The much underrated Iris Vermillion also makes a splendid contribution as Anna Kennedy, Mary's servant, using her dramatic alto voice with intelligence. Overall, I would say that this recording could 'revitalise' this opera and return it to mainstream repertory. It's very addictive and you will long for more and more of this high level of opera excitement ... honestly!!

Agnes Baltsa has a long history of singing the role of Queen Elizabeth I on stage and it shows in this recording where the character of the queen is superbly portrayed through song. Edit Gruberova is a superlative Maria Stuarda and the rest of the cast is excellent, especially Francesco Ellero d'Artegna as Talbot the Conte of Shrewsbury. A short synopsis of the acts is provided but there is no libretto or translation of the arias in this budget re-issue. The Sills/ Verrett recording has been re-issued on Brilliant Classics at a budget price which is also exceptional and may be the reference standard along with this recording. Donizetti - Maria StuardaHighly recommended.

I downloaded this from the MP3 store which I assume uses some kind of automated import and format process. As a result some of the tracks are truncated instead of fading out - the music is fine and it's good value for money but the chopped off endings are a bit distracting.
