Great as a standalone or for manual, 28 Dec 2009
This review is from: Electronic Speedlight Speedlite flash flashgun for canon 1Ds,5D,7D,30D,40D,50D,400D,450D,500D,550D,1000D,Nikon D700,D300,D100,D90,D80,D60,D40,D40x,D3,D2,D1,D5000,D3000,Olympus E620,E520,E510,E500,E420,Pentax,K20D,K200D,Fuji S5 Pro DSLR(Supprot 2 slave modes:E-TTL & i-TTL,YN-460)
This flash is a great bit of kit. Its slave unit works brilliantly and it has a great built in diffuser and reflector and a nice screw on stand which has a tripod socket on its base. So as a stand alone slave flash it is excellent and has two slave modes.
It takes NiMh rechargeable AA batteries which is very useful.
It does work on a Canon camera, I have 450D, but not in TTL mode. So really it would just be useful in manual mode firing by experimentation on your Canon camera. I'm not sure why they say it is Canon compatible, unless they mean that a Canon can set it off. Which is something as Canon cameras can be fussy about which flash units they fire due to the voltage.
So if you want a slave flash or a manual then buy it, but if you want a Canon TTL flash, forget it.

Good cheap manual flash, 29 Jan 2010
This review is from: Electronic Speedlight Speedlite flash flashgun for canon 1Ds,5D,7D,30D,40D,50D,400D,450D,500D,550D,1000D,Nikon D700,D300,D100,D90,D80,D60,D40,D40x,D3,D2,D1,D5000,D3000,Olympus E620,E520,E510,E500,E420,Pentax,K20D,K200D,Fuji S5 Pro DSLR(Supprot 2 slave modes:E-TTL & i-TTL,YN-460)
This flash is not really designed to be used on camera. It has manual control and can also work as an optical slave but does not support any of the TTL protocols on modern cameras, but then it isn't designed for that. The S2 optical slave mode does work with Canon E-TTL flashes though, ignoring the control flashes and triggering on the main flash.
If you want to get the best from it, buy two and get a set of PT-04 wireless flash triggers. Then take a look at the strobist blog on tips how to use them.
I have two of these and they work fine. Construction is not up there with a Canon 580 EX or similar, but it is very good for a fraction of the price. They generally feel quite robust and work as expected.
On the down side:-
The battery compartment cover is a bit fiddly as the retaining strap doesn't quite fold out of the way when replacing batteries. Hardly a major issue though.
The second problem is the on/off switch works on a press action, which is means it occasionally switches on in the camera bag. Try and avoid stacking stuff on top.
I have heard of problems with the wide angle diffuser being a bit flimsy, but mine seem fine.

Great piece for budding ameteur., 29 July 2010
This review is from: Electronic Speedlight Speedlite flash flashgun for canon 1Ds,5D,7D,30D,40D,50D,400D,450D,500D,550D,1000D,Nikon D700,D300,D100,D90,D80,D60,D40,D40x,D3,D2,D1,D5000,D3000,Olympus E620,E520,E510,E500,E420,Pentax,K20D,K200D,Fuji S5 Pro DSLR(Supprot 2 slave modes:E-TTL & i-TTL,YN-460)
This is a great little, actually big and powerful :), flash.
I am very impressed with the range the thing has. Very fast in recharging aswell. I can open fire 8-9 times before it wants to recharge on low. If you want to keep firing, do a burst shot of 3 then wait a second and a then another burst shot of 3 etc. You will not run out, well until the batteries die anyhoo.
This is a budget flash for a budding ametuer. This is a great backup however, which is why I am thinking of getting another one.
The spec:-
This works quite well, however on the Canon 1000d this does not allow you to customize the settings from the cam. No biggy really as all the buttons are on the flash itself. Another thing is that when use the S1 and the S2 modes, with the Canon 1000d, the flash does not work. This I beleive is because it is trying to cater for the broad list of camera's that it supports. Which may work on other brands. That's what you get from a generic cheapy cherub like this one :P but all in all, I am very impressed with this puppy.
Whats not mentioned from the sells description:-
At the bottom of the "foot" that the flash comes with, is a little screw thread. This allows you to place the flash onto a photo mount tripod. A very nice touch. This means, that you can also attach a cheap wireless firing module onto the flash, and then onto the tripod. Making you a pro in no-time!
Another thing to note, is the high pitch sound whilst it recharges. This is not really that bad, but Im sure that after a long photo shoot, like a wedding, would take it out on you. I dont care, as this is balenced out on the price. Which is miniscule really. The weight isn't a big deal either. Very light with 4x Li-Ion AA batteries.
Added to that, the reflector and difuser is such a good idea. Though the reflector card, couild possibly come off if you dont take care of it.
Anyhoo don't care as I am very impressed with this little Gem! I hope that everyone has found this helpful.
