Got to love the production of En' A-Free-Ka. Tunes of laidback intensity, rhythmically intricate, with layered instrumentation that sometimes has a discernible North African vibe. If you like the recent Mos Def or any of Graham Massey's Toolshed stuff, this is worth a look.

'The U.N. Plan' is for me the standout track. Yes, it's hip-hop, but it's other things as well. It's spiritual/ devotional dance music also. Beautiful. Like walking through narrow streets in the Casbah at 5.45pm in early October.

Elsewhere, 'Cheeba' (w/ Bilal) and 'Lil Girl' (w/ Fatima) - class, the definition of cool. Organic soulful vibe, just ace. 'Lost And Found' (w/ Jimetta Rose & Bilal) - does it get any better than this? Subtle instrumentation and the kind of ambient atmos I haven't heard this side of K Dixon Jr.

All in all, En' A-Free-Ka pretty much a revelation.

(Do I sense a change of mood in hip-hop? All that $$$ stuff and shouting about fictionalized robberies? It seems to have stood aside for something much more dignified, musical and imaginative.)
