Product Description

CD Description

Louisa & The Devil is the first album from long-established four-piece The Dodge Brothers. A decade of live performance has honed the Hampshire-based band into a tight yet relaxed ensemble and the album reflects this.

This group is to music what Zane Grey and Raymond Chandler are to the dime novel - consummate masters of a popular art. Iif David Lynch had set `Blue Velvet' in the 1940's, Louisa & The Devil would be the ideal soundtrack.

From its uptempo 12-bar blues and Chuck Berry-esque rockers to its haunting laments and slow ballads, there is a cinematic quality to this classic Americana. Louisa & The Devil vividly conjures images of knife-fights in the stockyard, binges in the graveyard, trains shrieking in the night. That is no accident - when they are not making music, all four Dodge Brothers are professionally involved with film.

Aly Hirji's rhythm guitar, driven by Al Hammond's washboard and Mark Kermode's vigorously-slapped double bass, underpin Alabama-born Mike Hammond's wailing lead guitar and vocals. It's hard to pigeonhole The Dodge Brothers: rockabilly, skiffle, blues, rock'n'roll - Louisa & The Devil tilts its hat to all these and more. Died and Gone to Hell (a rollicking song about hangovers) typifies the album's flavour - striding tempo, wailing harmonica and vigorous guitar work (the track features Billy Lunn of The Subways guesting on dobro and backing vocals.

Setting death, booze and heartbroken love to `tunes of proven merit', Louisa & The Devil is redolent of cheap whisky, noble women and expensive shirts: gangsters, gamblers and gunslingers meet on a railroad trip from the deep south to the old west with a knowing nod to modern sensibilities.

Sheer quality shines through the album's twelve tracks - great songs, great playing and lashings of brio add up to a fine recording debut from The Dodge Brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stuff, 9 Sep 2009
By Dark Train "Dark Train" (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews
Mark Kermode, yep he of Radio 5 Live fame, movie critic, Culture Show regular and doctor of all things horror can also add to his list of many tricks that he's a bl***y good musician, as is apparent on this wonderful release from The Dodge Brothers. Having seen the band busking in a railway station one minute to then appearing in front of 20'000 fans at Cropredy they seem to have attracted a cult following, myself included. This certainly ain't pop music but it is a truly unique album in today's world of disposable music and the album is well worthy of risking a few bob on when it arrives in stores in October. Can't wait to see them live again and will be listening into Radio 5 daily from now on as I'm sure Mark & the band will become regulars on the Simon Mayo show, hopefully performing tracks from the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get those toes a tapping...., 9 Sep 2009
By T. J. Green (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first heard The Dodge Brothers on Simon Mayo's Radio5Live show and assumed that this was some blatant nepotism for Dr. Kermode's 'hobby' when he is not reviewing films. During the interview the other members of the band, Aly, Mike and Alex sounded like they knew what they were talking about and then they were asked to play a few songs - I expected the worst.

How wrong could I be, I was completely taken by the abridged version of 'The Ballad of Frank Harris' (and 'Goodbye Booze', not on this album). On the back of 'Frank Harris' alone, I ordered the CD.

It has been played non-stop in this house hold, particularly by my 8 year old daughter, who plays 'Frank Harris' to any friend that comes around - and makes sure they understand the story.

A great collection of toe tapping songs and slower melodies about the topics they say they sing about, namely drinking, heartbreak, homicide, drinking, transport and a bit more heartbreak and drinking.

What is even more amazing is that all the songs, with one exception are written by the band. I could take you through my thoughts and praise for each track, but just order the CD and make up your own mind - stand out tracks for me are 'Frank Harris', '42 Days', 'Dreamland' and 'God's First Commandment'.

And to put the record straight, I don't know the band, I just enjoy good music, but long live nepotism, because without it I probably wouldn't have come across The Dodge Brothers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Feelgood and the Medics.., 8 Sep 2009
By James Thomas "Jimbobthomas" (London) - See all my reviews

OK, let's get this out of the way; yes, the majority of people looking at this release will be followers of Mr. Kermode and his incendiary film reviews on the BBC's Radio 5 and Culture Show and you could be forgiven for assuming that the band and their freshman release are merely the folly of an overblown ego and his access to free marketing via the nine-to-five job, yes? Well, yes, kind of.

The free advertising and 'guest' spots on Mayo in the afternoon have no doubtedly raised the profile of The Dodge Brothers beyond the usual niche market they might expect and a good thing it is too as their authentic but fresh lyricism and tight as a snare drum instrumentaion is instantly accessible to the casual listener whilst keeping the more serious officianado of skiffle/rockabilly more than happy. And what does that sound like? Try and imagine the surviving members of a car crash between Calexico, Bill Haley and the Comets and Davy Graham falling into a recording studio and you will be on the right track. Don't know who Calexico and Davy Graham are? Shame on you, go and check them out also..but try and imagine the perfect soundtrack to a train ride from Chicago to Memphis and it will be called 'Louisa and the Devil'..
