Manufacturer's Description

The Z Series range of Solid State Disk (SSD) from Integral enhances computing speed and performance with its SATAII high-speed interface, and provides users another ideal option of external storage with its external mini USB port. 5.0 out of 5 stars I can feel the difference, 13 May 2010

This review is from: Integral 2.5 inch 64GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (Electronics)
This Integral SSD is great and it works like a dream. I'm getting up to 2 hours more battery life on my Pavilion and boots much quicker. I'm no longer getting that rumbling noise from my old hard drive. I can feel the difference! 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Unit, 12 May 2010
By John (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I wanted an SSD to replace my existing laptop hard drive because I needed more capacity (60GB -> 128GB), wanted to reduce my power consumption so that the battery would last longer, and wanted better performance.

I was a bit worried to start with, as this was one of the cheapest SSDs that I could find. It wasn't *the* cheapest, but it was the cheapest with a USB connector that allows it to be used externally. This is important if you want to transfer files from your existing drive.

The unit arrived very quickly, in modest but adequate packaging. It's a nice looking unit, very light, and comes with the USB cable.

It all seemed to work fine (although I didn't notice any performance difference when used externally) and I transferred my existing set-up (a dual-boot Windows XP / Fedora 12) onto the new drive. In the end I decided to reinstall the Windows partition from scratch as I wanted a clean install without all the junk left behind from a few years installing / uninstalling various bits of software. It took a few days to do everything, but it all got installed eventually and works fine. This was the only pain, but of course it would have been the same with any new drive and had nothing to do with this one in particular.

Overall I am very happy with the unit. Boot times are noticeably better - Windows XP in about 13 seconds; it is completely silent (which is quite strange to start with), and my battery life has indeed improved. Day-to-day use is also a lot faster: applications start up much quicker, and installing new software is pretty fast. The only problem I have noticed is that occasionally my laptop just stalls for anything up to 10 seconds with the disk light on. However, this only tends to be quite soon after boot-up, and it manages to clear itself after a short while.

    4.0 out of 5 stars caution/good after-sales service though, 15 May 2010
By D. Goddard "duncandisorderly" (london, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I've bought five of these things. one of them is the main HD in this very macbook-pro & seems to be working ok; though the macbook boots up in less than 35 seconds, it takes forever to shut down.
however, two of the original five have now failed. on one of them, I was trying to install a winclone disc image of an xp build created under bootcamp on the macbook, the idea being to have separate drives in the laptop for mac-os & windows.

somewhere during the formatting procedure, the SSD became unusable. I have tried all sorts of things (g-parted, super fdisk & so on).

I've read up on this; seems these SSD things don't like being full-formatted, though the evidence for this is somewhat circumstantial & in some cases based on bad science. I read about MBRs & the mapping of data blocks onto physical memory blocks, & how the size of each is critical to the lifespan of the drive....
there's a possibility that telling the formatting o/s to skip the first few megabytes will get around the problem. possibility.

in any case, the second failure was still in its original case & connected to a mac mini where it's been since I bought it five weeks ago. it's done nothing particularly extraordinary- my g/f has been keeping some documents on it, & reported today that they were all inaccessible & that the drive is now announcing itself as 4GB instead of 120GB.

so. the other three are still ok at the moment, but I am backing EVERYTHING up on at least two other "real" hard drives. I have faith in this technology, & it will eventually work properly, but it bothers me slightly that when I wrote to integral about this, they didn't respond, & now their site is misbehaving. (15may2010)
    ho, as they say, hum.
