This is my favourite version of the Beethoven concerto, with the stereo Heifetz from Boston with Munch a close second. It is a completely different, much slower approach than the latter, but oozes inspiration and wonderfully singing violin tone. It is easily the best of Menuhin's recordings, including all the Furtwanglers. The Vienna Philharmonic is on top form, there is some stunningly beautiful playing in all sections as the orchestra duets with the soloist. The concerto is recorded in the Musikverein without an audience, and the sound is amazing for 1960 (don't expect digital sound or wide dynamics, and it is a little thin sounding at low volume). Both Kreisler cadenzas, superbly virtuosic and very classy, are played without cuts. The Romances, both with Pritchard in London, are an excellent filler. Great Beethoven from one of the greatest and most prolific exponents of his works for violin with orchestra. I was delighted to see this CD at such a low price, as I had been searching for a reissue for many years.

A classic recording by the greatest violinist of the last century. So smooth and involving. A must for anyone who loves good music.
