Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Acer Aspire 5536 range has been designed for everyday home users that want a portable PC with the multitasking performance of dual core processors and comprehensive multimedia features, all housed in a good looking design which won’t look out of place in any home.

Acer Aspire chassis detailDesign
The Aspire 5536 features an attractive glossy sapphire blue cover that looks both classy and distinctive. On the inside, the floating keyboard makes typing easier, reducing the chance of “typos” by providing a clear separation between the keys. The power on switch is illuminated in a bright blue neon light, showing the performance waiting within - this contrasts neatly with the dark grey Neoweave palm rest, designed to reduce fingerprint smudges and create a classy environment to enjoy your work and play.

Crystal Clear Visuals
A lot of attention has been paid to the visual display of this laptop. Featuring a high definition 15.6” widescreen with 16:9 aspect ratio ensures it will deliver stunningly bright and lifelike images, ideal for enjoying high definition content.
The screen also features CineCrystal™ technology for intense colour saturation, superior contrast ratio and sharp photo images making image reproduction clearer and movies and photos more enjoyable.

All Encompassing Audio
Great multimedia is not just about the visuals, you also need great audio! The Aspire 5536 features the latest 3rd Generation Dolby Home Theater® technologies for virtual 5.1 surround sound, which delivers a vivid audio experience to music, movies, and games, either through the speakers or headphones.

Touchpad movement examples, including scroll and zoomFinger Tip Control
Technology is only useful if you can make it work for you, and the Aspire 5536 keeps you in control.

The new multi-gesture touchpad lets you navigate, scroll and zoom with ease. By doing a circular motion you can simply scroll up and down an image or file for seamless navigation. Want to zoom in and out? All you need to do is a pinch action to zoom in and the reverse to zoom out. And finally, to change pages or skip through a set of photos simply swipe your fingers across the pad, it could not be easier.

To ensure you do not disrupt your movie or games by accidentally moving the cursor, Acer have built in a button by the touchpad that will disable the touchpad to prevent this happening.

On the top left of the keyboard is the easy launch buttons for Wireless and the Acer Back Up key, which allows you to duplicate files to another location quickly and easily.

On the top right of the keyboard is the Programme Key, this allows users to create a shortcut to their chosen application, keeping you in control and making your computer work for you.

WiFi Draft N certified -- SignalUp technologyComplete Connectivity
Notebooks excel on their connectivity, and the Aspire 5536 does not let you down.

Connectivity to the internet is available via Gigabit LAN, the fastest LAN connection available or wireless 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N, the latest wireless standard. To enhance the wireless signal on this notebook Acer include Acer SignalUp technology which uses a high performance PIFA wireless antenna and optimises the location of the antenna on the notebook giving exceptional wireless performance.

Web Cam
The integrated Acer Crystal Eye webcam allows you to keep in touch with friends and family, face to face. To ensure you get the best experience it also features enhanced Acer PrimaLite™ technology consisting of a premium sensor, ultra-efficient firmware, and high-quality lenses to provide superior video performance under low-light conditions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great spec for the price, 8 Dec 2009

This review is from: Acer Aspire 5536 15.6-inch Laptop (AMD Athlon X2 QL-64 2.1 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Vista Home Premium) (Electronics)
Bought this as a Christmas present for my wife who has recently started making noises about wanting to do some web surfing ( more likely shopping). I liked the idea of the built in wireless card and also the webcam so that we could set up web chats with friends and family.

The processor is pretty good with a decent amount of RAM and a really good hard disc. She is unlikely to graduate into serious gaming so the package on offer was perfectly adequate.

My son bought a larger Acer about 18 months ago and he has found it to be very reliable and a good performer.

The 5536 arrived very quickly and was very straightforward to set up. I had already bought a new wireless router for my own PC and the Acer locked on immediately and fired up the internet browser in seconds. It has been all plain sailing since then.

A few minor gripes that mean it falls short of the 5 star rating.
    1. -It comes bundled with a plethora of Acer branded and other software that falls into the dreaded "Bloatware" category. I removed the majority of that immediately.
2- Also there is a trial version of MacAffee antivirus software which does not get the best of reviews from techies out there. I removed that also and replaced it with some freeware.

3 -The battery life is not that great - about 2-3 hours on a full charge. This is not too much of an issue since my wife will be using the laptop mainly at home plugged into the mains.

All in all though a great machine for the price.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 5 Aug 2009
By G. Crozier (London, UK) - See all my reviews

Excellent machine. Fairly hefty but portable.

The function to put the session in memory and put the computer in a low power state so you can resume working is very helpful for someone like me, who often has lots of windows open and leaves a number of projects half completed overnight. It was a real pain on my old machine re-starting and then manually re-opening the webpages I was drawing on and the Word documsnts I was editing. Makes it a lot easier to pick the computer up for five mins and then put it down.

I had a problem with getting bluetooth to work but that may have been something I did. I also made the mistake of loading huge amounts of data onto the machine before making my emergency back up disk (so it turned into 16 emergency back up disks).

I'm sure there are better machines out there, but not for £500. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Award Winning, But Corners Cut, 27 Dec 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5536 15.6-inch Laptop (AMD Athlon X2 QL-64 2.1 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Vista Home Premium) (Electronics)
I bought this as a result of the "Best in Class" award in PC Pro Magazine: it won "Best Value Laptop". An old Toshiba had been knocked out of action and I needed a replacement. It's reasonably fast for the sort of mobile work I have to do, mostly WP and spreadsheets, occasionally presentations with PowerPoint. However, crammed though it is with games and "utilities" I will never use, a few corners have been cut. For instance, no rescue disc has been provided; a purchaser is told to make one on a DVD. I have yet to get this to work, after several tries. It got stuck part-way through and won't finish the job. I probably would have bought it with Windows 7 instead of Vista if the choice had been available, but as the bump-up in VAT comes in a few days, I thought it was better to get the machine now, rather than wait. Battery life is reasonable, though whether this would stretch to watching a long DVD is open to question. The sound is particularly good. The WiFi isn't as sensitive as the previous laptop's was. The keyboard is fine, with a good positive action. The trackpad can be annoying, with its division into two sections. All in all a good, inexpensive buy. See the PC Pro A-List review; I agree with most of what it says.
