Product Description

Cheerful Mimiko has a very strange family for a little girl - a Panda for her Papa, and his son, Panny, calls her Mom! Join this happy family and their many adventures! When Panny follows Mimiko to school, he must pretend to be a teddy bear so Mimiko won't get into trouble, but everyone wants a cute Panda! Despite his efforts to behave, Panny causes trouble in the school kitchen, and now the whole school is after Panny! Then, Panny makes a new friend, Tiny, a baby tiger who's wandered off from the circus. Getting Tiny back to his mom becomes the first adventure, but after a hard rain, the whole town is flooded and Mimiko, Papa Panda and Panny must rescue Tiny and other animals from the trapped circus train!

Synopsis

From the mind of one of Japan's greatest animators, Hayao Miyazaki (PRINCESS MONONOKE, MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO), comes this charming children's show. The show centres on Mimika, a young girl with a rather odd family. Her father is a Panda, and his son Panny calls Mimika mom. Panny and Mimika's adventures begin when he follows her to school one day and pretends to be a teddy bear so as not to cause any trouble. However, Panny has some trouble keeping himself quiet and soon everyone in Mimika's school has found him out. Later, Panny befriends a lost baby tiger who Mimiko, Papa Panda, and Panny have to try to get back to its mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for All Studio Ghibli fans!, 23 Jun 2009
This is a great little animation, which was first released at Japan in 1972.

(I bought my version from Australia, but am so excited that it's finally coming to the UK!)
-------------------
The plot follows Mimiko, a bright little girl left alone when her grandmother leaves on a trip.
She comes home to her house in a bamboo grove to find a baby panda. His father soon comes to visit and they decide to become a family!

A great film to watch with the kids, and well... even adults will enjoy it ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Totoro but entertaining, 14 Sep 2009

This was Miyazaki's first work before Totoro, two pilot episodes for a kids TV series that never happened. You probably would not be watching it if it wasn't for the Studio Ghibli connection but that does not mean it is bad, more that it has lower production values and aimed at a younger audience. Its particularly interesting to look at it in relation to Totoro as there are elements of the story that show a direct influence on the genesis of Totoro. I enjoyed it!

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
As a fan of Hayao Mayazaki I was looking forward to watching "Panda Go Panda" as it is widely known to contain something of a blueprint for the giant Totoro which features in the incredible film "My Neighbour Totoro".

As with many other works from Mayazaki, Panda Go Panda features a female lead, she is in the bizarre situation of being left home alone by her grandmother but ends up gaining a new 'family' when a giant panda and his son move in with her. Most of the humour from the short series comes from the fact that she now considers herself to be a mother despite being a young child herself.

Visually this early seventies feature has more in common with 'old school' anime such as the Astro Boy cartoons or the film Little Norse Prince. There isn't the level of detail that you expect from many modern Anime works, but it's not crudely animated either.

There's little substance to this mini-series, but it is endearingly cute. Small children will no doubt love watching the bright animation and you'll end up singing the catchy repetitive theme tune. The girl Mimiko seems constantly bursting with energy, she even seems excited at the prospect of burglars in her house! If you're expecting the depth of a Studio Ghibli classic then you won't find it here - there are no deep messages.

In a nutshell: You need to accept this for what it is - it's not a masterpiece, it's a bit of colourful fun.
