Product Description

Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton gives an utterly compelling performance as a woman on the edge playing a dangerous game in this tense and riveting thriller. Fired from her job, broke and with her judgement clouded by too many vodka shots, Julia hits rock bottom and hatches a reckless plan to kidnap the 8 year-old grandson of a wealthy businessman and hold the boy to ransom. But she finds herself totally unprepared for life as a fugitive with a terrified child in tow, and events soon spiral wildly out of control. With both the authorities and a brutal criminal gang on her tail, a desperate Julia finds herself locked in a deadly fight for survival. Special Features: Interview with Tilda Swinton

Synopsis

Starring Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton (MICHAEL CLAYTON, BURN AFTER READING) and directed by Erick Zonca, JULIA centres on the eponymous character: a woman fired from her job, without money and suffering borderline alcohol dependency. At her wits end and desperate, she concocts a plan to kidnap the eight year-old grandson of a successful businessman in order to extort a greedy ransom. However, Julia is not prepared for the danger that's part and parcel with being a fugitive on the run, soon realising that she has bitten off far more than she can chew. With the police and a criminal organisation in hot pursuit, so begins Julia's desperate fight for survival.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously drunk, 7 May 2009
By Jonathan Carr "joncarr" (London, UK) - See all my reviews

The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is the ending. Right up until that moment it's just great. (You have to get it now to see what I mean, don't you?)

Tilda Swinton is great as the delusional drunk who loathes AA and can't see a future without booze. The story shifts when she takes the ravings of another drunk seriously and puts a crazy plan into action. What makes the movie work, when it does work, is the way it stays close to reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars D & D, 18 Oct 2009
Loved this film. Tilda plays a great drunk and gets in over her head with her antics but proves rather clever too. I found this quite funny at times, not sure if this was intentional or not. Quite a long film but her acting is great and worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars First class, tense, great ending, 22 Nov 2009
By Vicky Martin "Vicky" (North London UK) - See all my reviews
Really good movie this; brilliantly acted lead role captures the obsessive alchoholic personality really well, great pacing, tense, some very funny moments. The parts in Mexico are so realistic - supporting roles are all well cast and played, especially the Mex villain at the end...and the ending? Well its not Hollywood is it -very good and funny as well
