5.0 out of 5 stars A clean-easy barbecue, 5 May 2010
This review is from: Platinum Stainless Steel 3 Burner Gas Barbecue
This is an excellent barbecue. It is for the `clean family' - those who like to open their barbecue lid without looking at rust, carbonised metal, green slime and mountains of white mould growing over the charcoal, flame bars and volcanic rock. The Firefly is a stainless steel barbecue - a bit light and with a tinny rattle - but comes pre-constructed (except for the two side extensions).

I have had more barbecues than I can count both in the UK, Spain and Australia. Still going strong in Spain is the reliable Weber kettle (`Smokey Joe') running on charcoal. Some say charcoal gives the best flavour; it is certainly the worst to clean - not only the ash box but the carbonised grill that drips thick 'black engine oil grease' (a mix of ash and grease) that ruins your patio.

I bought the Firefly because my Weber gas barbecue had come to the end of its life and I hated the hard labour cleaning it demanded. The Weber grill racks had so many cross pieces on them that cleaning them became a frustrating tiring chore (And my wife screamed at the mess in the laundry sink!). The grease catcher was a nightmare as two separate elements had to be scrubbed. The porcelain flame bars tended to chip and rust dreadfully over time. Cleaning these - unless you don't mind your guests staring at a lot of blackened goo - was another messy scrubbing job. But it cooked satisfactorily and gave long service (with parts replacements from time to time).

So to the Firefly. This has two heavy duty chrome grill racks with straight rods that are much thicker than the standard oven racks. There are no cross pieces. These fit into most sinks and can be washed clean in a jiffy. The three flame bars are light and a quick wash in a bucket of soapy water with a rough sponge pad is sufficient. The interior of the barbecue can be wiped with washing up liquid and, apart from a bit of scrubbing here and there, comes up shiny new. The Firefly stands a bit higher than my previous barbecues so I find myself stooping less. The gas grill on the side will probably go unused - what do people use them for - it's a barbecue for goodness sake?

All the Firefly grease runs into a large full-width tray and this can be covered with silver foil by inserting this from the back of the barbecue. Fitting the grease tray takes a bit of `hit and miss' practice - more so if you line with foil beforehand. This is a small price to pay for something that is effective and again easy to clean.

Having given myself campylobacter poisoning from my own barbecued chicken (never forgotten!), I am a stickler for barbecue hygiene. The Firefly seems to fit the bill for ease of cleaning. How it will fare after a heavy summer of cooking, grilling and rotisserie remains to be seen. The Firefly is a butane burner but I am using propane from those BP light and transparent bottles. I checked with the manufacturer and they said okay. I will return with further reports.

The Firefly comes with a tough weather-resistant cover.

A month of bbq-ing later.....

Does the job well but the downside is the cleaning!! All my own fault! Cleaning is easy but with all that shininess it means you want it back again so guests can say: 'Wow'! when you open the lid. So the tendency is to spend more time than is strictly needed to give it that Raymond Blanc kitchen look - an hour from mess to polished finish. Fortunately, there's no scraping - more a case of rubbing with cream cleanser. Cleaning is also easier if you don't use marinades with a sugar base as this carbonises in any bbq.

Now for two more downsides: that shiny pit when you open the lid means that it is difficult to see the gas flames or which are alight (it's good to be absolutely certain). Consequently, you have to nip round the back and peer along the line of the grease tray. Fine. But just above this - the rear lid of the bbq is designed not to close completely. If you peer into this 'slot' you can see your food cooking without the need to lift the lid. WARNING! If the meat should flare, a searing hot fat blast can suddenly flash through this outlet. My eye lashes are okay now. I'll stick to lid lifting.

Still rate it highly.

TIP: When you've finished for the summer and do not intend to use it again. Clean the barbecue thoroughly and remove all moving parts and store indoors - this includes the gas burners which in the Firefly are easy to remove.
