DVD Description

Sheila Hancock, Rhys Ifans and Bob Hoskins star in three very different takes on, and insights into, life and death – each one poignant and compelling, tinged with sadness and humour.

A dying woman (Sheila Hancock) waits to receive drugs to take her own life. A farmer (Rhys Ifans) tries to find a way to free himself from the yoke of a dominating mother. An assassin (Bob Hoskins) waits in a public lavatory for his next target. These three people don’t know each other, but they have one thing in common: they are all about to kill or be killed…

Synopsis

Based on three short stories written by celebrated writer Hugo Blick, THE LAST WORD MONOLOGUES features an all-star class that includes Rhys Ifans, Bob Hoskins and Shelia Hancock: In 'Before I Call You In' a woman (Hancock) reflects on her life as he faces a certain death; in 'Six Days One June', a man (Ifans) recants the story of his domineering mother and how he managed to escape her; and in 'A Bit Of Private Business' Hoskins stars as a hitman preparing his next job.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping stuff, 18 May 2009
By Judith (Scotland) - See all my reviews
I saw these monologues when they were originally broadcast. Not easy to watch, but, like much of the best on the box, mesmerising and very real. The actors involved each create such a strong sense of character that despite their stature, you forget that, and go with the person on the screen and their story completely.
Rhys Ifans is particularly good.
Well worth seeing and lending to a friend. I am not sure why the reviewer who only gave this excellent collection only one star was expecting no 'adult content', given the subject matter includes an assisted suicide and a planned assassination.
Fine British writing and acting.

1.0 out of 5 stars not impressed did not realize it was modern monologue with bad language, 6 April 2009
By Patricia R. Stranger - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are looking for the old monologues that we used to hear on the radio before the days of television, do not expect too much from these discs. The first disc was modern and to me, was rubbish. After re-checking the disc holder, I discovered there was also bad language which I do not consider to be entertainment so I went no further.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Effective, 17 Dec 2009
By The Kinniburgh Kid (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Something of a writing and acting masterclass, this collection of three monologues is worth getting just for the last one by Sheila Hancock. Having recently become familiar with her through listening to her read her autobiographies on audio book, to see her here act - superbly - the final minutes of a woman about to commit assisted suicide is deeply moving. The subject is thoughtfully written, but her performance is piercing. It stayed with me hours afterwards and even now, a few days later, the emotions it aroused are still fresh.

All three performances are good in different ways, although each is right for the character portrayed. The casting is spot on too - Ifans is a little pathetic, Hoskins menacing and Hancock searingly honest.

Not one to watch over and over, but definitely one to pass on and recommend to friends.
