Synopsis

This 2008 concert in Vienna pays tribute to one of classical music's most legendary figures: conductor Herbert von Karajan, best known for his long tenure with the Berlin Philharmonic. Now under the watchful eye of conductor Seiji Ozawa, Karajan's orchestra here performs pieces by Beethoven, Bach, and Tchaikovsky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, 8 April 2009
By John Armitt (Stavanger, Norway) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Karajan Memorial Concert - Beethoven/Bach/Tchaikovsky (Anne-Sophie Mutter/Berlin PO/Ozawa) [Blu-ray] [2008] (Blu-ray)
This concert was to mark the 100 years since Karajans birth and is quite simply outstanding. A German newspaper critic stated that the Berliner Philharmoniker had never sounded so good. Well, I don't think that any orchestra in the world would match the performance given by them in this concert under the superb direction of Seiji Osawa. The intensity and emotion of Tchaikowsky's 6th symphony is indiscribable. The Beethoven violin concerto with soloist Anne-Sofie Mutter is sublime. The solo piece of Bach as played by Anne-Sofie Mutter is just on a different level to any other performance of this piece I have heard. The whole concert is a great tribute to a great conductor. The audience were, like me, left stunned at the end of the finale (the Tchaikowsky), at first gently clapping as in a trance and then, when the senses had returned, bellowed out with great gusto and rapture. This Blu Ray disc is a must for music lovers. Technically the video is superb in full HD with good camera work and the sound track is offered on no loss 5.1 PCM as well as PCM stereo. This is not just a truly remarkable musical tribute but an experience to savour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well remembered Karajan, 11 May 2009

Having been a long time admirer of HvK's conducting career, it was with great delight that I received knowledge
of this issue.
The wisely chosen programme covers what he himself would have chosen to perform.
Miss Mutter is, as ever, radiant in person and performance, whilst Mr. Ozawa, perhaps for the first time ever,
for me, becomes a great Conductor.
A DVD to be played many times, greatly acknowledged.
