All, this laptop has a manufacturing problem with the fans and the fan controller software. It makes a loud 'errrrrrrrr' noise every time the fan spins up, and slows down. And the fan comes on every couple of seconds, but rarely stays on. (the driver software is badly written). It is so annoying to use, and appears to be an international problem affecting all CS model laptops according to the 100's of other people online who have raised issues with it at Sony's support forum.
The cause is a cheap fan combined with poorly written driver software. My CS-11 pink model is due to be sent to Sony for repairs, which will involve a new fan. The fan controller software does not have a fix yet, and may never do so... so there isnt really a solution to the issue.
Its a stinker.. a real shame considering the rest of the machine is ok. Do not buy this product as you will feel like I do now.. cheated and ripped off by Sony. Premium priced products.. without the quality in this case. Im posting this here because whilst Sony are being polite about the issue, they do not have a proper solution to this problem.
All these machines should ideally be recalled. Its not Amazon's fault hence why Im posting here to avoid them having these machines returned.
Ps - 100's of people on Sony's own forums and other laptop websites have the issue. Its all models of the CS range. Avoid people.
Should Sony resolve the issue satisfactorily I will update this post to state as such, but just imagine buying one new.. only to open the box and find a lemon... I did... on Christmas day.
The title says it all. I bought one last December and the fan behaviour is, to say the least, poorly managed. The ever increasing noise levels recently, though, have to be heard to be believed. Only now am I finding that the web is littered with other VAIO CS owners complaining of the same problems with the fans in their PCs and the same lack of action from Sony.
Cannot Recommend A Purchase
Update: despite all the complaints about fan noise from CS owners on the Sony UK website's VAIO Club forum, I've now been informed that Sony engineers believe my CS is "working within specification". Perhaps it is, in which case last December's Trusted Reviews verdict of 5/10 was spot on as to how the CS is specified, if not a little generous. Wish I'd taken the time to read up on the computer, as I usually do when buying any electronic goods, but I needed a laptop at short notice and just bought what was in the shop window, trusting that the Sony name would bring good quality and performance with its somewhat steep price tag.
As before, I can only say: Cannot Recommend A Purchase.
