A good product, 23 April 2009
I bought this product from PC world (£169!), after lots of exploration of the NAS drive market, for me it does the job nearly perfectly.
I wanted a drive that I could consolidate all my media to, and access it centrally when I needed to. It also had to be dimensionally small, look good (so as not to distress the missus) and run quietly. It ticks all boxes here then.
It also had to fulfill my future requirement to stream media directly to the TV, which it will do no problems, via a suitable games console or any media streaming player.
It plugged straight into my BT home hub, and the drives were viewable instantly under the Network link. The drive is formatted so that there are 5-6 differing folders, these can be mapped straight to 'my computer' or you can install the software which will undertake this process for you.
Network speed is pretty good, an 800 megabyte file transferred in under 5 minutesish. Plenty quick enough to stream video from it.
It does have back up software included, however I would always perform manual backups, so am not interested in this.
It is quite easy to configure, with multiple configurable options I don't understand, or require even the LED's brightness can be adjusted.
The only item that seems to be missing is a power saving function, as the drive does not seem to auto spin down when not in use. This does not bother me, as I have no problem with using the power switch on the unit. Hopefully this will be addressed in future firmware upgrades, unless I am a dimwit who has yet to learn how to utilise this function? If so please let me know.

No Frills, 19 Jun 2009
It's so simple to set up you plug it in & it works.
Yep it's that easy & thats exactly why i bought it.
Simplicity however comes at a price...
No abiltiy to install & run third party software ie Slimserver etc..
but it does have DLNA & an iTunes server built in. My PS3 streams HD/SD movies over our Network via the Iomega built in Twonky Media server without breaking a sweat.
(However for us Popcorn owners you can't install any YAMJ software on the the drive at all so you have to update your movie collection using software on a pc. The Popcorn Hour still streams Videos from the Iomega network drive without a problem though so don't let that put you off.)
The Iomega Drive has software that you can install on your pc to manage the Network drive. With it you can create share folders/drives, power down & restart, password protect the shares, update the firmware, drag & drop files to the drive if you wish, assign network names... there's more but I can't remember off the top of my head.
Like everyone else I considered the other options, NV+ network drives etc.. but at the end of the day buying this particualr drive came down to simple maths.
Functions plus Hard drive size minus cost. Other Network drives give you torrent downloading, ability to install third party software, Raid configuration, hotswapable drives... at a price.
The Iomega is a strictly no frills network hard drive. It streams effortlessly has plug & play set up & features dlna media streaming using a Twonky server & has a 1TB capacity. If your after a no fuss network storage solution then i'd recommend this product.
I've had my Iomega 1TB Network Hdd up & running non stop for a few weeks now it runs quieter than a laptop & very cool too.

Drive fine - Support hiddeous, 25 Sep 2009
This review is from: Iomega Home Media Network 1TB Hard Drive (Electronics)
Now that my drive is finally up and running i'm quite pleased with it. As a shared media drive i can't fault it and it looks really well. I've got 4 laptops connecting to it wirelessly. However, i would strongly suggest that before you part with your money you pay a visit to the iomega support forums and look at the issues some people are having.
One common problem is firmware updates are bricking a lot of people's drives or disabling the print server function. This happened to me and i had to get a replacement (which is now working so i have no intention of upgrading the firmware). You can't roll back to an earlier firmware version.
Another problem is actually getting your computer to even recognise the drive. My first one simply plugged in and worked fine until the firmware upgrade rendered it useless, the second one would not connect. I eventually had to switch from automatic ip addressing to manual and then i also set up my router to give it a permanent address of its own (so hardly plug and play then). Also i have to switch on my router first and let it start up and then switch on the drive a minute or so later otherwise the router won't find the drive. The print server is quite slow and sometimes it just sits there doing nothing at all. Sometimes it works fine. It's quite temperamental.
Having said all of that, i've been looking at other makes of drives and these problems seem to be similar on various makes. Print servers being slow and drives not connecting.
So what was the point in writing all that you ask? Well, because one thing to bear in mind is support. And IOMEGA support is horrendous! Check out the forums for yourself and you'll see they very rarely answer people's questions, customers are left to try and help eachother. If you're a novice with networks (like me) then i'd consider an alternative brand with a better reputation for support. It's taken me 3 weeks of forum posting, help from other users and one shop return to get a working NAS drive with no help whatsoever from IOMEGA.
4 stars because once working it's a nice solid drive with an easy to use config page. The only thing letting it down is support.
