I've had this item for just over two weeks now and I have to say that I'm impressed! Sound and vision are very good indeed (i used to have an iRiver h320 and the sound from the Archos is better in my opinion)and if it wasn't for one minor niggle then I would have given it 5 stars no problem.
I say a minor niggle but its a little more than that and it has to do with the add-ons; some of them I can understand Archos wanting to sell separately, but others,ie, the software cinema plug-ins and the basic snap on unit should have been included in the box as without them it makes the item very difficult to use. Many file formats are unable to be viewed without the cinema plugins and charging(8 hours without or 3 hours with) and being able to record or view content on your tv is impossible without the dvr snap-on.This is definately a bad idea from Archos and will put some people off from buying it.
Apart from that my unit is perfect, no dead pixels or flaky paint/scratches appearing and I love the parental setting as I have a few horror movies on my Archos that I wouldn't want my daughter to view when playing games and messing around on the internet(which is fast and very easy to use). When set on parental mode all the files that you have marked will then become invisible on the menu screens unless you enter a code. I also like that you can put it in a sort of sleep mode and that it asks if you want to carry on playing back your last mp3 or film that you last watched or paused. You can lock the screen so you don't accidentally stop watch your doing and the volume buttons will still work when locked.The screen touch sensitivity is good and I have no problems using the keyboard/buttons even though I have fairly fat fingers.
Archos really have done a good job with the Archos 5, the only real question now is ,durability?

I had been looking into getting my hands on a doit all player looked at many reveiws and specifications untill my head would explode. i decided to bite the bullet and invest in the Archos 5, first impresions was the weight of the thing but not detured i fired and Archos up that locked up instantly! ok i reset it and started playing with the onboard videos & features and i was amazed how sharp the images were. i attempted to transfer my own videos to the unit only to be confronted with "if you would like to veiw this type of file you can buy the plug in"!!.. as with alot of the features with this unit. It seams very obvious that if you want the Archos to do all the things it tell you in the details you will have to spend almost the same cost in add ons as the purchase cost. I came to the conclusion that I cannot justify that kind of cost so i promptly retured the item. dont get me wrong the Archos is a fantastic unit but at a cost.

I bought my first Archos in 2004. It was the AV420. At that time, iPods only played MP3s, but my unit was able to play videos. It was my companions for endless work trips around the world. And never gave me any headaches. After years of good service, It just stopped working in march 2008.

I loved it so much that I started to think about when I was going to have the chance to buy the newest model. I arrived in London in the first days of October 2008 and in just a few days bought the Archos 5 and its accessories. In just a few months the headphone jack started to malfunction. I asked for support. Well, I had to pay �25 to send it through mail, wait, wait, wait and when they sent me back it was not fixed. So they even made me lose more money and didn't fix my equipment. You know what i had to do? I just had to use the FM radio adapter as my new headphone jack. I had to find a way to go around a terrible piece of equipment that not just doesn't work but has a terrible support.

I had to go back to Brazil after i finished my studies in the UK and didn't have enough time to wait for another round with Archos support. In Brazil, it was supposed to work as my DVR. But the Operational System just crashes every day. I just watch a movie and, invariably, it crashes in the middle. I had to use the reset button. It is a small hole the size of a needle. After many many resets, it just stopped working and now i have to wait for the battery to run out of juice. It is pathetic.

So, please, hear me out. If it was just one problem, we could say that I had a bad break. It happens. But after this series of problems, I can say that i am deeply disappointed with a company that, for some time, I deeply admired. I will probably never, ever buy another Archos machine again.

This is the message i sent them, through their support. It asks me to tell them "Detailed description of the problem". I wrote:

"Many problems.

The software keeps crashing in a daily basis. The only way to make it work again is using the reset. But since i have to it so many times, it is not working anymore. You know what i have to do now? Leave it alone until the battery runs out and then I restart it. You should be ashamed of making such a terrible machine.

Add to that the fact the the repair i asked you guys to do last year was not done. The unit arrived in my home in London just days before I came back to Brazil and i didn't have the time to go through the whole process again.

I bought my first Archos (AV 420) in 2004. I loved that gadget. I talked to my friends about how superior it was to the iPods. It worked fine until it broke in march 2008. It was ok, the unit traveled the world with me. Time to buy a new one. When i arrived in London, the first thing i did was buy a new Archos 5. Oh, and the whole line of accessories. Sadly, it was a huge mistake.

The thing is, the AV 420 just never crashed. I didn't need suport. With this one, I needed and it just didn't work at all. I am very disappointed and angry. How come that a company that I admired for years could become this mess?
The end result: I will never, ever buy another Archos again. But I would like to, at least, squeeze a few more years of my unit. It should work, I should be able to use it properly.

What should i do?"
