Good pik quality let down by other shortcomings, 7 Dec 2009
This review is from: Samsung SPF105P 10.2 Inch Digital Photo Frame - Black (Electronics)
Nice looking and has a "feel" of good quality build. Picture quality is good. I'd read in other reviews elsewhere that the paper instruction sheet is not particularly good, and I agree with that. To understand the touchscreen buttons (on the r-h side of the screen) you need to load up the CR Rom of operating instructions that accompanies the screen and take the trouble to read them. Also, they are difficult to use consistently - sometimes they seem to ignore you, at other times your touch moves the control 3 or 4 places instead of 1.
The screen isn't quite as huge as I'd expected for £140. Naively I'd assumed a 10 inch screen would refer to width, but of course it refers to the diagonal measurement. The length x depth measurements are actually 8.7" x 5.2". The high quality resolution 1024/600 means that many of your piks may be too small to display full size on the screen (ie a pik that is 700 x 500 will look quite small). This means that buying a good size SD card will allow you to load up your piks without shrinking them. HOWEVER: for some unfathomable reason, Samsung has built this screen as a "Widescreen" format, ie it is wider than the standard digital photo. WHY ?? Why didn't they design this in 4:3 ratio? This is important. It means that all of your standard 4:3 digital photos will display with a blank strip 1" wide down each side of the photo, meaning that effectively your picture frame is down to about 6.8" x 5.2". The only way to use the full screen is to individually crop your piks down to 5:3 ratio, or to adjust the "Aspect" control built in to full frame - but that distorts your pik, or cuts off the top and bottom of the pik!
Another fundamental failing of this product for sale in ENGLAND by AMAZON UK is that it comes with a german 2-pin plug so you can't immediately use your exciting new product unless you happen to have a spare 2-to-3 pin shaver plug convertor in your pocket. That's when the fun begins. It worked nicely for a while, but after disconnecting and reconnecting it, the darn thing was dead. Took me an hour of patient troubleshooting to work out firstly that the 1A fuse in my shaver socket had blown, then secondly the 2A replacement I'd inserted had also blown. I don't know if that is par for the course: it is finally working properly with a 3A fuse. If that goes, I'm sending it back! So make sure you have a 3 pin converter with at least a 3A fuse...
The internal battery back-up is a nice touch as it lets you hand it round the family cord-free.
The music function will let you run a little bit of lightweight MP3 music, but don't expect much volume or depth to the sound. To be fair, that's not a criticism, it's just that the speakers must be tiny to fit in this frame.
OVERALL: nice picture quality let down by a couple of fundamental shortcomings. Next time I'll look for a 4:3 ratio frame (I've since seen that Kodak has one).

My first Samsung product - and probably the last!, 2 May 2010
This review is from: Samsung SPF105P 10.2 Inch Digital Photo Frame - Black (Electronics)
Incredibly, I've been sent two of these photo frames, both with serious faults. I've refused a third one and have asked for my money back. The first one sent did not meet the specifications in two respects. Firstly the battery life was 60% of that stated and discharged in a few hours when not in use. Secondly, the internal memory was 70% of that stated and the folder system was chaotic, even displaying pictures which had already been deleted! On top of this, the 'touch' controls were appalling - no other word for it! The replacement arrived after a week, and I couldn't believe it - it wouldn't even switch on!
It is a great shame this product has been let down by the above faults as I have to say, the picture quality was brilliant and I loved the 16:9 format. Also It is one of the very few picture frames offering an internal battery - a very useful feature in my view - especially when you're in company.
Come on Samsung, I'm sure you could do better than this.

Samsung SPF105P 10.2 inch Digital Photo Frame review, 20 Jan 2010
This review is from: Samsung SPF105P 10.2 Inch Digital Photo Frame - Black (Electronics)
Nice item, I chose this one because it did music playback as well. Fast delivery from Avides. Having read the other review I e-mailed question about UK plug and they included a UK adaptor in the box.
Didn't take long to set up although the written instruction weren't very comprehensive. Hardest was to find the control buttons, they are light up touch control and on the front to the right of the screen as you are looking at screen. You can't see them until it's switched on and you press that side, then they appear. It also took a while to find the on/off switch which is located on the back of the unit.
Pleased with the quality of display but it is best suited to 16:9 aspect ratio pictures (widescreen), this is what I wanted as I mostly take in 16:9 now to view also on my TV. I tested a few of my older 4:3 photos and in the fit to screen setting scenery was ok but people were stretched a bit wide. On fit to width setting people were ok but you do loose a small bit off the top and bottom of your original photo, it seemed to me to be acceptable though. Or you can have original fit for 4:3 and have black bands down the sides.
I added some of my favourite MP3 music and that makes a nice background to your slide show, max volumn isn't very loud but ok for a background. There are a reasonable amount of transitions for your slide show and you can also leave it on display just one photo.
It's my first digital photo frame and I'm pleased with it and with the service from Avides, it arrived quickly from Germany and was well packaged.
