4.0 out of 5 stars Reassuring piece of kit - after 12 weeks, 31 Mar 2009
This is a nice little item. It's a bit clumsy feeling and the Chinese-translated-to-very-bad-English instructions leave a lot to be desired, but once you figure out where you should be holding it, what to listen for etc (which it doesn't tell you), it offers real peace of mind that the little one is doing well - especially reassuring for us as we'd had a miscarriage last year.

On the down-side (as well as the need for much better instructions) I think you've got to be VERY lucky to hear your baby from as early as it says. We tried a few times between 9-11 weeks and could only pick up my heart beat, so actually it was a bit stressful. After 12 weeks, with a bit of searching around for 3-5 mins, we could find it then, and it gets easier/quicker the further into your pregnancy you go. The ultra-sound gel definitely helps too, so get the one with the gel included.

Now that I'm showing (22 weeks) and feeling baby kick and wriggle a lot, we don't tend to use the monitor any more as the midwife says they're untested over a long period of years, so she advised to keep usage to a minimum.

TIP - if you pick up a heartbeat, hold your fingers to your pulse just under your jawline in your neck - that way you can tell if it's yours or baby's. Baby's will be a LOT quicker (like a horse at the Grand National - my husband ended up calling the baby 'the jockey' in those early months!)

Good luck and enjoy!
