This Black & Decker GKC1000P is a powerful 18 volt alligator lopper chainsaw with 2 speeds. Ideal for lopping and logging. This machine works like a manual lopper but with the power of a chainsaw. This GKC1000P has a robust 10cm effective cutting chain width and is powered by a rechargeable 18 volt battery. This Black & Decker GKC1000P is fitted with the most up to date and patented jaw which encloses the moving chain providing added protection and safety to the user. The loppers also have an easy oil system. This machine is perfect for saving time and effort for work in and around the garden and is suitable for pruning trees and cutting fallen branches into smaller pieces. This machine approximately makes 150 x 3.5cm cuts per charge;the re-charge time is 8 hours.

Being a 60 year old femail weakling, I find this croc eats through branches and boughs easily. Plus it's fun to use. Pruning jobs I've had outstanding for years are not getting sorted. It was easy to set up too. I just wish I'd known how much oil it uses so I could have ordered it at the same time; so get some oil too. It does everything I want of it. I actually look forward to my pruning now!

I bought one of these for my wife: we've just bought a house and the previous owners had let the garden run away out of control. She decided to take on the garden whilst I got on with demolishing walls and ceilings but quickly found the task of sawing up cleared shrubs and trees too much for the manual handsaw, pruners and loppers. I suggested a petrol chainsaw, but as is the case with many people, the prospect was too intimidating. (Being a typical bloke, I would of course have cheerfully ordered the biggest chainsaw on the market and then probably have killed myself with it). Then I noticed Amazon's recommendation of the Alligator, and you can see how safe it is just from looking at the picture. Both hands have to be on the handles or it won't work, and the chain is enclosed, so it's much easier and safer to use than a chainsaw. Reluctantly, my wife agreed that I should get one.

In operation, I would agree with everything the other reviewers have said. I have used it a couple of times; it took a 15 foot laurel down in a couple of minutes and is so well balanced that it always feels manageable and safe.

The only down side is that, rather unexpectedly, my wife has come over all proprietorial about the thing; apparently it has a "cute face", so wheras other items of garden equipment are known as "the wheelbarrow", or "the spade", this one has a name. He's now called "Jaws", gets very carefully oiled and properly maintained and together they systematically reduce bushes and branches to neat piles of logs. However I'm no longer allowed to use him.

Despite that, I would have no hesitation in recommending this product; most gardeners would be glad to have one.

The product does exactly what it says on the tin and can cut some reasonably big stuff, its big plus's for me were;

1) Easier to start than a chainsaw
2) The Jaws grip the wood so is great for cutting wood too small for a chainsaw
3) Clean and easy to carry (compared to a chainsaw)
