5.0 out of 5 stars Great Britten, 15 Jan 2009
By Ian A. White "Gus Thomas" (Middlesex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had never heard either Daniel Norman or Christopher Gould before but, on the strength of this beautifully-recorded recital, I certainly hope to do so, again. Every one of the generous serving of thirty songs is, as regards both the singing and the playing, performed with absolutely admirable clarity, control and sensitive expressiveness.

For me, one of the most rewarding things about this duo is that the singer possesses a voice which is distinctively different from that of the tenors usually active in this repertoire, having a "tighter," rather-more sonorous sound, with no excess of vibrato. At all times it is never less than a pleasure to listen to, in these songs, and is often a good deal more than that(eg, the gentle, effortlessly-breathed stream on which Mr Norman floats "A Laddie's Sang" into our ravished ears, is worth the price of the CD, on its own!).

So - congratulations,BIS on this issue and let's have another one, soon. My personal preference would be for Britten's first Canticle, the Michelangelo sonnets and the Serenade and Nocturne orchestral song cycles, plus a couple of the English folk-song arrangements, if you've got room!
