wouldn't live without one, 5 Aug 2008
This review is from: BlackBerry Curve 8310 Smartphone (QWERTY) (UK, Grey, QWERTY) (Electronics)
The way of the future.... virtually everything you need in your mobile life =
- decent camera
- email, calendar and contacts database all synchronised with your desktop
- browse the internet
- text messaging
- great phone (excellent sound quality)
- GPS
- music player (has micro SD card to expand capacity)
- can open most attachments including pix and word documents etc,
It also has the most amazing battery life - 7-10 days on medium use.
Setting up the email accounts (up to 10) was very straightforward (more so than Outlook). I have a blackberry and a laptop, and would probably rather lose the laptop.
Very user friendly and intuitive. Their nickname is "crackberries" and with good reason: once you've had it a week you'll be an addict. Amazingly capable.
Downsides: lots of faffing about learning about the difference between business blackberry (uses company server) and personal blackberry (uses 'blackberry internet service'). Someone needs to write a brief guide for the uninitiated.
Had to do a lot of trawling the web to work out a way to get email sent from blackberry to appear in the sent items of my PC. For some stupid reason the desktop software synchs everything EXCEPT email when you connect.
Ubiquitous - everyone's got them and they're a major irritation in the cinema / theatre coz people think emailing is OK even if actually calling someone isn't. Its NOT!! The keys 'click' when you're typing. Quite irritating if you happen to be sitting next to a user.
Roxy media manager (part of the desktop software that backs up and synchronises your music and photos) is painfully bad. But you can sidestep it.
Pre-loaded GPS software is also appalling but you can download Googlemaps for mobile - hey presto, works fine.
Apart from these minor niggles, very highly recommended. Quite simply the best, most user friendly, most accomplished piece of kit I own.

2.0 out of 5 stars
does lots, but not so well, 25 Sep 2008
This review is from: BlackBerry Curve 8310 Smartphone (QWERTY) (UK, Grey, QWERTY) (Electronics)
I've now had my phone long enough to find out the weak links. First
the good points - it's a nice size, the battery life is REALLY good, even if you use it a lot, the qwerty keyboard makes it easy to type and the e-mail function is excellent. If you want a phone mainly to keep in constant e-mail contact, this is the one for you. And the camera is pretty good although it only has digital zoom.
Now the not-so good points. It doesn't come with much in the manual, and it's a darn pain to set up. As already pointed out in another review, the GPS software is dreadful, but the Google software is really easy to download and EXCELLENT. Secondly, there is no predictive texting, so if you write a lot of e-mails you're going to get arthritis in your thumbs pretty quickly. Then there is the bluetooth - easy enough to set up to pair with bluetooth devices, but if you use it for handsfree in the car and are used to them automatically syncing when you get in the car, you're in for a nasty shock. It takes a couple of minutes each time you get in the car to reconnect the BB with handsfree as it has to be done manually. And bad luck if you forget - you'll have to ignore that important call. Then there's BB messenger - sort of like Microsoft Messenger, only it doesn't seem to add your contacts even if you accept an invite. It doesn't work.
The settings for the phone profiles don't do what I set them to. The ring tone hasn't changed to what it has been set as, and various other functions (alarms, reminders) don't behave as per settings - silent when should be bleeping or vibrating and vice versa. And there is no explanation as to why or how to fix.
If you want to view attachments on e-mails, you're going to have to buy additional software. spreadsheets do not display correctly, and neither do pdf's. I haven't tried word processor documents yet.
And then the next problem - installing additional software, (especially if you desktop is an Apple) is a bit of a problem. Currently, the installation is not supported by the Sync software for Mac so if you want to add programs, you have to find a Windows computer and install the sync software on that. I haven't tried it so I can't comment on the reliability but I've had endless problems with the Mac sync software crashing and freezing.
I haven't really tried out the multimedia software either but the music software seems to be unpopular.
And finally, although you can add in an additional memory card (microSD) it's not on a convenient side slot, it's underneath the battery so you can't just take it out to synch files without resetting the phone each time (and it takes a good 5-10 minutes to boot up after a reset)
It should be a great phone, with all the features. If only they worked as well as the e-mail system does!

Blackberry Curve, luv it., 22 Sep 2009
This review is from: BlackBerry Curve 8310 Smartphone (QWERTY) (UK, Grey, QWERTY) (Electronics)
Well what can I say! Love love love this phone! It takes a bit to get used to but once you get the hang of it you are constantly finding new tricks and tips to make it easier to use. The email setup was really easy to do and the qwerty keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but after a few SMS text messages its a breeze. Love the numerous ways you can personalise each application to give a different noise when messages received. The Blackberry Application facility is brilliant but you may need to increase your memory size to accompany the many applications you can download. The only downside is it can sometimes take a bit of time to reboot when application installed but this is understandable with the amount on the phone. The camera is good and the video too. I already have songs on it and love listening to my music using my bluetooth headset which has great connectivity. The other downside is it would of been great to have wi-fi but other than that I would highly recommend this phone to anyone interested.
