Manufacturer's Description

The Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology: Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable a double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band.To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N makes it ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance. With the Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games, and run media-intensive applications at incredible speeds, without the hassle of stringing wires!

4.0 out of 5 stars Linksys by Cisco WRT160N Wireless-N Router, 1 Jan 2009
By Sarahbella (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews

A good buy! This arrived promptly from Amazon a day earlier than expected. Its very simple to set up with a cd-rom which walks you throught the set up. I was all set up in about 15mins. I've been able to use PC, PSP, PS3 and iPod Touch through this. It has one of the highest security encryptions available which was a big part of the buy for me.
The only reason that I did not give this 5/5 is that it occasionally times out, so you need to press a button on it and then the connection is restored. This has only happened on PS3 and ipod - never with the PC.
Overall, highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars No problems with the router itself, very satisfied, 14 Jan 2010

This review is from: Linksys by Cisco WRT160N Wireless-N Router - 300 mbps (for Cable connections i.e Virgin Broadband) (Electronics)
My old router, a Belkin G, had started disconnecting every 5-10 minutes so I bought this as a replacement. Set up was very easy, and within 10 minutes everything was working perfectly. I ran into two snags: the first one was when I turned on Network Lock by accident, preventing my sister from being able to connect. Turning it off obviously sorted this instantly. The second was that one of the laptop's I was trying to connect it to wasn't showing up with any wireless networks, which turned out to be a problem with its wireless card. Neither of these were actual defects or problems with the router itself.

The signal seems very stable and snappy compared to my old router. In my room I'm not getting ethernet cable connection speeds but the speed I am getting is decent nontheless. I'm on 20mb broadband, get 14-18mb when connected directly via ethernet cable to my router, and 7-12mb up in my room (the signal has to pass through steel girders so this is to be expected).

The software that comes with the router is excellent and provides a nice hub for configuring your router if you're inexperienced with networking. One feature I don't like is the ability to screenshot other computers on the network that have the software, and even though you can probably disable it, I've only installed the software on my PC for this reason (there's no real need to have it on other PCs that won't be fiddling with the settings).

Overall a solid, stable router that doesn't offer blindingly fast connection speeds but is definitely an improvement over my old Belkin G.
