DVD Description

House on Haunted Hill is one of the new breed of waste-no-time thrill machines, and a particularly effective example at that. The plot is pure contrivance: For a party stunt, a wealthy amusement-park manufacturer (Geoffrey Rush) offers five people a million dollars if they spend the night in a former insane asylum where the patients murdered the sadistic staff. But it turns out the five people who arrive aren't the five he invited--did his wife (Famke Janssen), who hates him, make the switch? From there events unfold with a smart combination of human and supernatural machinations; spooky jolts are dispensed at regular, but not entirely predictable, intervals. The visual effects owe a considerable debt to Jacob's Ladder, a much more ambitious movie; House on Haunted Hill just wants to get under your skin, and succeeds more than you'd expect. Rush is his entertainingly hammy self; Janssen, Taye Diggs, Ali Larter and Bridgette Wilson are attractive and reasonably straight-faced about it all; and Chris Kattan is genuinely funny as the house's neurotic owner. Some elements of the plot seem to have been lost in the editing process, but it hardly matters. More bothersome is that the scares go flat when computer effects take over at the end--the digital images just aren't as creepy as the more suggestive stuff that came before. But that's just the very end; most of the movie has a lot of momentum. Make sure you watch until the end of the credits for a final bit of eeriness.

Spoiler alert!
Return to House on Haunted Hill, directed by Víctor García, is the equally spooky sequel where Sarah Wolfe is the only living survivor from the massacre at the Vanacutt Mansion, but no one believed her claims that ghosts were responsible for the gruesome murders that took place there. Now her recent and questionable suicide leaves her sister Ariel (played by Amanda Righetti) no choice but to devote herself to finding out who - or what - was responsible for her death. Ariel discovers that Sarah sent her the diary of the sadistic Dr. Vanacutt just before she died, offering clues to the diabolical evil that resides within the house. But the diary also makes Ariel a target in a deadly treasure hunt that leads a group of unwitting victims back to the Vanacutt Mansion, reawakening the terror imprisoned within the house on the hill. This time, the house and the evil spirits inside are out to make sure that no one leaves alive. --Bret Fetzer

This is a good dvd boxset of house on haunted hill and return to house on haunted hill. Both films are good and entertaining to watch, but a little too short. The CGI used is quite good in both films and the extras available on both discs are quite good. Not scary but entertaining!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great horror movies, 1 Mar 2008

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL
An eccenric millionnaire and his wife invite six people (one of them is Ali Larter who was in The Hills Have Eyes (2005) and played Clear Rivers in Final Destinations' 1 and 2) to stay in their "haunted" mansion for one night. He tells them that if they manage to stay and survive the whole night he will share one million dollars between whoever remains. He gives them each a gun "to protect themselves".

They all agree to stay and shortly the charactors start to get killed off one-by-one. Some people become suspicious and try to leave but there is a malfunction from within the house and they are sealed inside.

Lots of suspence and stalk-and-slash horror from the director of Th13teen Ghosts and Ghost Ship. If you liked either of those movies then you are guaranteed to like this as it is very similar in theme and has the same type of suspence and death scenes.

I really enjoyed this movie and only deducted a star from the full 5 because I was surprised because it is an 18 but isn't really that gorey. Don't let this put you off, it is gorey in some places and there is something happening all of the time so you never really get bored while watching it.

RETURN TO HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL
In my opinion, "Return To House On Haunted Hill" was a very good sequel to "House On Haunted Hill" (although it would have been better if one or both or the survivors from the first movie had been in this).

It is gory, suspeceful, and has mostly origional deaths - what more could you want from this type of movie? There were a lot more people in the house this time than in the first (about 10) so there is a higher body count, too.

Althought there is quite a lot of gore in this movie (a lot more than in the first movie) it wasn't as gory or over the top as most people were suggesting. But the best thing about the movie I thought was that, while most horror movies either concentrate on either being suspenceful and creepy, or on being violent and bloody, this movie had both gory deaths and suspenceful scenes, so you get the best of both worlds.

Overall a very good sequel, which I'm sure fans of the first movie will enjoy. After seeing this I'm certainly hoping that there will be a third movie in the series.

(REAL NAME)
I loved the film House On Haunted Hill it was just EEEEEK from the start and i was really excited to see how it was continued in the next one. Return To House On Haunted Hill is good but not as good as the first and i expected the people who survived in the first to be in this one but other than that both these movies are a must see GREAT BUY!
