3.0 out of 5 stars Value for money. Note the detailed specs are slightly wrong, 7 Jan 2008
I bought this machine from Amazon a few weeks ago. For the price you won't get a better computer, especially a 17 incher. But I did find that in order to run even just some old games the system quickly complains about lack of memory and demands that you shut down your application. This is because the graphics borrows from the main memory and Windows Vista pretty much needs all that 1GB ram to run smoothly, so you'll probably need to at least double it to 2GB (note due to configuration you need to replace both memory modules to the same size). That's what I did (cost £40) and haven't had a problem since. The computer will take up to 4GB ram memory. Also, when I opened her up I discovered that there is room inside for a second hard-drive - this isn't mentioned in the specs.

But also note that the graphics chipset is a 610 (i.e. older version), not a 630 as mentioned in the detailed spec, though whether most users would notice any difference I don't know. Laptops aren't really designed for gaming because the graphics cards are too adapted/integrated into the specific laptop system to enjoy the regular software upgrades that desktop graphics cards get (e.g. you'll get a few more compatability issues), plus laptops will more likely suffer heat problems (much personal experience) from heavy gaming. But I have (with the extra memory added) successfully run Medieval 2: Total War (lowest settings), Combat Mission 3 and Silent Hunter 3 on (moderate settings) and Celestia (with 4K clouds and some Jestr extra detail mods and graphics fiddling).

People rave about the Acerbrite screen, and it is nice - especially playing movies, but it is glossier than a normal screen so you'll find you have to mess around with getting the screen angle just right to enjoy it.

Overall, its a decent build, and excellent for the price. I'd have much preferred Windows XP but we're all stuck with Vista. You'll probably get annoyed with ie7 as it still stops you visiting some innocent sites such as BBC local weather pages, but you can always download Mozilla Firefox instead.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Acer Aspire 7520 Notebook, 5 Jan 2008

Excellent bit of kit this for a very good price £395.00 from Amazon.
First of all the delivery, absolutely excellent, Amazons communication as ever was spot on and they delivered really quickly.
The laptop is well worth the money. Takes about 30mins to set up but once running is pretty quick for only 1gb memory running on Vista. I've increased the memory to 2gb and it makes a huge difference.Fitting the chips is easy but the memory cover needs a bit of force to remove once the screws are withdrawn, use a broad flat knife so as to not damage the case.
The screen is superb but if I could change anything I would recommend a matt finish screen rather than the 7520's glossy one.
The scratchpad is fine but I personally found it a little difficult to use (my fault, maybe??) I've added a mouse, 99p off Ebay and its much easier to operate..
The wireless Lan is quick and efficient, no problems there.
The weight is a little on the heavy side but it is a big laptop so should be expected.
Would I purchase this PC again? Simple answer, absolutely YES.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bang for Bucks, 12 Mar 2008

Purchased from Amazon the day Tesco Direct stopped stocking this laptop at £349 the same day as Amazon offered it for £349!

As usual Amazon delivery was spot on, prompt and well packaged.

It ran straight out of the box, after a few clicks with the mouse.

It found the home wireless network, downloaded all the codecs I needed, copied a couple of films and albums off the pc, wonderful.
Here is my only gripe, the sound is awful, absolutely appalling volume. I tried everything, every setting that could be tweaked was tweaked, nothing.
Considering that this machine has twin stereo speakers and a built in sub woofer, runs Dolby Digital Live, it should work better than this. With the laptop on my lap, I could barely hear the sound, and this was without any quality at all. Maybe it is a fault with my machine, has anybody else experienced this.

Apart from this, it is a full spec go anywhere do anything machine, which is what I bought it for. It has connected to all wi-fi spots on my travels.

I took other reviewers advice and upgraded the Ram to 2GB (actually 1791mb, I thought 2gb would be 2048mb. The installed 1GB was in fact 756mb almost 25% less than advertised!)This made a big difference. I added a small mouse as I'm not fond of touchpads, a lovely 'The Gimp' case.
