5.0 out of 5 stars No need for a PC ever again, 31 Oct 2007
By M. R. Greenhead "martingreenhead" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the machine for 2 months. I was looking for a new PC for my kids, although it wasn't needed in the immediate future. I walked in to an Apple store to kill some time and walked out with a 24" Imac.

My initial worry was around PC software (I still have my own PC) but if you think about it what do you need to use? If you use mainly the internet and photos/videos then this does it all better and slicker. I was able to transfer over my photos just be connecting up my existing external drive. Also if you get an imac now (I was too impatient so will need to shell out more cash) you get Leopard which includes Boot Camp, enabling to boot into Vista if you really need to.

Looks wise anyone who sees it is blown away. One person commented that the fan was noisy, however the sound came from my PC about 20 yards (and 3 walls) away! It is absolutely silent. The keyboard looks flimsy but in practice is a joy to use. Love the built in webcam. You even get a cloth to wipe the fingerprints from the screen (memo to Apple: electrify the screen to put people off of touching the sleek, gloosy finish!)

My kids love it, using the included ilife 08 software - Garageband and Photo Booth the undoubted favourites.

I love the fact that you put it to sleep, press a button a day later and it jumps in to life where you left it.

All in all a breathtaking piece of kit.

Gripes? Well, I have to say I hate the mouse, it is not too ergonomic and the right click is annoying (you have to lift your left finger first!). Also on the UK keyboard Apple have switched the " and @ signs which can be annoying too. But these are really minor annoyances.

If I had the cash my own PC would be replaced tomorrow. And buy load for every room in the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first mac and it is amazing., 11 Jan 2008
My first mac and I'm blown away.

Now, I've ugpraded from a 64MB gfx, 256MB DDR1 RAM, 40GB HD laptop that was struggling to run xp never mind Vista so you could argue that I'd be happy with almost any new computer. You'd be right. But I work in IT. I'm hard to impress. Adverts on TV don't do it for me. So after several months worth of research looking for a computer solution that meets my specific requirements (look after several thousand photos, over 100GB of music, possibly do video and music editing in the future and be able to do web publishing), I went for apple. This was a big step for me, I've never used let alone owned a mac, but I thought it was time to give macs a try. The question then was whether to pay £400 or so premium for a laptop, or go for the desktop. I went for the desktop.

I didn't buy mine from amazon, I got a refurb via apple's on UK website. I was suitably impressed. You couldn't tell it was a refurb apart from the slightest of smudges on the screen. That's a smudge, not a scratch. Irritatingly it came preinstalled with tiger so I had to kill about 40 minutes upgrading that to leopard. A minor irritance. Since then I've thrown on mac for os, dreamweaver, quicken and it hasn't murmered. Installing is far easier with Mac OS than Windows, response times from opening up a new program to waking up from sleep are far more impressive, even than my friends' brand new £1K home built super duper vista killing dream pc. I love it. Things just work. The Mac OS is pretty easy to get used to, most of it is (probably deliberately) the same as windows. ALT + TAB switches windows in windows, CMD + TAB (The Cmd key is in the same place as the Alt is on a standard windows user interface keyboard) does the same thing.

It comes with 5 USB slots. 3 on the back and 2 on the keyboard. Plugging in the keyboard, mouse, ipod, printer, an external 750GB Hard Drive for time bank and an external MMC card reader has used all of the usb slots and one of the two firewire slots. But I can't imagine I need any more (the speakers that come with it are highly impressive but I used the external audio headphone style slot to plug in some that I already own.

All in all I'm extremely happy. It is hard to imagine going back to Windows.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALUMINIUM - VERY ZEN, 20 Sep 2007
By Lee Hendricks "Jimmi" (Ascot, Berkshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mine arrived today and I felt so strongly about it that I had to write a review. The new aluminium body with black surround looks even better in the flesh than it does on the Amazon or Apple web sites. The screen is far sharper than previous iMacs - I sold a PowerPC G5 to get this one. The resolution and general appearance of the graphics is better because Apple appear to have used the same glossy screen technology that they first used on the portable MacBook.

The machine really is a thing of beauty. I went for the wireless keyboard option and I am delighted with how it performs. It has the short, pleasing key-press of a quality laptop keyboard instead of the clunky ling-throw buttons that appear on most machines sold today.

The only two anomalies that I've found thus far:

1. There is nowhere to stick your Apple remote. Apple seem to have done away with the magnetic fixing in preference for an aluminium surround.
2. The old white mighty mouse looks very outdated in a sea of aluminium appliances. Apple have probably spotted this and I would expect a new and improved Mighty Mouse with aluminium finish to be in the shops before long.

Well done Apple - a truly wonderful machine: high performing; and amazing to look at.
