4.0 out of 5 stars Not for Farmers, 18 Feb 2008
By Mr. R. Tweed "richard_tweed" (Hertfordshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 Keyboard and Mouse (Electronics)
I've had this now for a couple of months, and am generally pleased. Had I read the comments from P.A.Farmer before buying it though, I probably wouldn't have done and that would have been a shame. Some of the comments aren't exaclty 100% accurate.

1) The "Microsoft" logo on the mouse is a metallic adhesive label on the bottom of the mouse, and whilst is not flush, does not catch on the skin. You can barely feel it.

2) The backlight on the keyboard is not poor - its anything but. You can manually change the brightness of the backlight to suit preferences, and so if you use the keyboard at an angle, then you can set it brighter. Its FN - F12

3) I have experienced the mouse and keyboard being disconnected, and this is slightly irritating. Only happened a couple of times, but did expect better.

5) I've not accidently brushed against the F1-F12 keys myself. They're below the level of the normal keys.

7) The left mouse button is much like a normal mouse button. No reason why this should double click this more than any other mouse.

8) The mouse wheel is difficult to press down and as such you tend not to use it. Why this is so is beyond me, and makes it useless when gaming.

9) There are two buttons on the side of the mouse. I'm right-handed so the LH button is positioned OK, but the RH button is not.

The keyboard is well made and looks good. In my view the important thing about keyboards is their ease of typing and this one has nice soft laptop stlye keys.
The response rate is perfect. I've had other wireless keyboards (although not bluetooth) and the response on games was poor. On this however the opposite is true having played it with Crysis, Bioshock, CoD4, Orange Box.......

The mouse is OK to use. Solidly made with a couple of drawbacks, most notable the wheel-button and the additional buttons on the side. The MS Wireless Mouse 6000 that I used before was much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 30 Dec 2007
By Mr. L. Leek - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 Keyboard and Mouse (Electronics)
I've been using this keyboard for about a week now and so far its been superb! I'm still finding features that I didn't realise it was capable of! I did consider upgrading the mouse when I bought it but I'm glad I didn't now as 8000 mouse is excellent! The only bad points about this keyboard are that the touch sensitive buttons at the top (F1-F12) are a bit temperamental and often require several taps. Also the lack of a conventional numeric keypad is slightly annoying and the silver finish makes it quite hard to distinguish the keys in certain light.

I am currently only running Windows XP on my PC and have had no performance or compatibility problems. This does however mean that the Windows Media Center button on the right of the keyboard has no associated function.

All in all this keyboard and mouse are excellent! The problems I have listed above could easily be put down to nit picking and are quite insignificant. It seems very well made and highly reliable.

4.0 out of 5 stars i love it!!, 26 Jan 2008
By Colin "(52)" (UK and Azerbaijan) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 Keyboard and Mouse (Electronics)
I bought this keyboard for the following features:
- no numeric keypad - so my mouse (right-handed) is closer to my right shoulder,
- wireless
-ergonomic key layout,
and additional bonus I discovered is that the keys are beautifully soft-touch.
I do not game, I use this in my office and carry it around as i visit other sites. I have some early RSI, and this keyboard is helping me greatly - especially the light/soft action of the keys.
I even like the charging system.
I used the bundled mouse for a couple of months and I liked it. However i suffer a lot of RSI type discomfort and I have now switched to the Microsoft Natural 6000 mouse. If this had been an option in Blutooth to be compatible with this keyboard I would have given the keyboard 5 stars. Now I have to have an additional chunky wireless receiver for the mouse on my desk.
But I LOVE the keyboard. One more minor gripe - a soft leatherette carrying sleeve or something for the keyboard would be fantastic. I have searched the internet but cannot find anything suitably sized - I use the foam shipping sleeve reinforced with grey duct-tape.
Come on Microsoft - provide a carrying sleeve, and a ergonomic mouse options and it will be a 6-star system.
I have bought a second set - for my home use, and carry one with me every time I move between offices and sites (but i cannot even find a large enough lap-top bag for this keyboard).
